Figma Intelligence
90 AI-powered design tools for Figma. Works with your Claude, OpenAI Codex, or Gemini CLI subscription. One command to set up.
You (chat in Figma plugin) <---> Local Relay <---> Claude / OpenAI Codex / Gemini CLIQuick Start
Step 1: Install an AI CLI and log in
You need at least one. All four use your existing subscription — no extra API costs.
| Provider | Install | Log in |
|---|---|---|
| Claude | claude.ai/download | claude login |
| OpenAI Codex | npm install -g @openai/codex | codex login |
| Google Gemini | npm install -g @google/gemini-cli | gemini (opens Google sign-in) |
| GitHub Copilot | npm install -g @github/copilot | copilot then type /login (GitHub device flow) |
Step 2: Run setup
Open your terminal and run:
npx @sarjallab09/figma-intelligence@latest setupThe
@latesttag guarantees you pull the newest build, even ifnpxhas an older copy cached. Every later command listed below includes@latestfor the same reason.
This will:
- Install dependencies and build the MCP server
- Detect which AI CLIs you have and check their login status
- Ask for your Figma Personal Access Token (how to get one)
- Register the MCP server with your detected providers
- Start the local relay server
- Copy the Figma plugin files to your Documents folder
- Automatically copy the plugin path to your clipboard (makes Step 3 one-click)
- Optionally install as a background service (macOS)
Step 3: Load the plugin in Figma (one-time)
After setup completes, you need to import the plugin into Figma. You only do this once — after that, the plugin stays in your Figma permanently.
Note: Requires Figma Desktop app — the browser version won't work.
The setup command already copied the plugin path to your clipboard and opened the plugin folder in Finder. Just follow these steps:
Open any file in Figma Desktop (The plugin menu only works when a file is open)
Open the Resources panel by pressing Shift + I (or click the grid-like icon in the top toolbar)
In the Resources panel:
- Click the "Plugins" tab at the top
- Click the three-dot menu ( ... ) in the top-right corner of the panel
- Select "Import plugin from manifest..."
A file picker opens. Here's the easiest way to find the file:
Option A — Paste the path (fastest):
- Mac: Press Cmd + Shift + G, then Cmd + V, then Enter
- Windows: Press Ctrl + L, then Ctrl + V, then Enter
The path was automatically copied to your clipboard by the setup command.
Option B — Navigate manually:
- Go to Documents > Figma Intelligence > select manifest.json
Click Open — the plugin is now installed!
Step 4: Open the plugin
You can open the plugin any time using one of these methods:
- Right-click anywhere on the canvas > Plugins > Figma Intelligence
- Press Shift + I > click Plugins tab > search "Figma Intelligence"
Pro tip: Right-click the plugin name and select "Save to favorites" — this pins it to the top of your Plugins menu for instant access.
That's it. The plugin auto-connects to the relay server. Start chatting!
Figma Personal Access Token
Required so the plugin can read and edit your Figma files.
- Open Figma Desktop
- Click your profile photo (top-left) > Settings > Security
- Scroll to Personal access tokens > Generate new token
- Give it any name (e.g. "Figma Intelligence")
- Copy the token — Figma only shows it once
Commands
After setup, you can manage the relay with these commands:
npx @sarjallab09/figma-intelligence@latest start # Start the relay server
npx @sarjallab09/figma-intelligence@latest stop # Stop the relay server
npx @sarjallab09/figma-intelligence@latest status # Show relay + provider status
npx @sarjallab09/figma-intelligence@latest doctor # Diagnose issues
npx @sarjallab09/figma-intelligence@latest setup # Full setup (first time or reconfigure)
npx @sarjallab09/figma-intelligence@latest update # Update plugin files to latest versionEvery time you restart your computer
If you installed the background service during setup (macOS), the relay starts automatically — no action needed.
Otherwise, just run:
npx @sarjallab09/figma-intelligence@latest startThen open the Figma plugin — it reconnects automatically.
Updating to a new version
When a new version is released:
npx @sarjallab09/figma-intelligence@latest updateThis copies the latest plugin files to your local folder. Figma automatically picks up the changes — just close and reopen the plugin.
What's new in v1.5.0
- Setup never crashes on a brand-new machine. Previously
setupexited with an error when no AI CLI was installed or logged in; it now warns, completes the rest of the wizard (relay, plugin files, VS Code extension), and prints clear next steps. - Windows: Task Scheduler hint at end of setup. macOS users get a launchd auto-start option; Windows users now get a copy-pasteable Task Scheduler recipe so the relay can survive reboots.
- VS Code extension is now a single bundled file. The shipped
.vsixdropped from ~8 MB to ~155 KB, contains exactly 5 files, and no longer leaks the TypeScript source or sourcemaps. - MCP wiring summary at end of setup. Setup now prints which of
claude / codex / gemini / copilotwere wired vs. skipped (and why) so the four MCP-config divergence is no longer silent. - Subscription-only Claude auth. The
ANTHROPIC_API_KEYenv var is no longer treated as a Claude login proof — runclaude logininstead. - macOS / Windows cross-platform fixes in the optional ComfyUI helper scripts.
What does this do?
Type something like "Make a login screen with a blue button" and the AI will actually create the components and layers in your Figma file — not just describe how to do it.
The plugin exposes 90 MCP tools across 5 phases:
| Phase | Tools | Examples | |---|---|---| | Visual Intelligence | 7 | Screen cloning, visual audit, accessibility audit, sketch-to-design | | Design System Accuracy | 6 | Intent translation, layout intelligence, variant expansion, linting | | Generation & Scaffolding | 14 | Page architect, swarm build, prototype wiring, composition builder | | Sync & Bidirectionality | 9 | Token export (16 formats), component code gen, handoff specs | | Governance & Health | 15 | Health reports, token docs, design system scaffolding, DTCG validation | | Node Operations | 38 | Create, read, update, delete nodes, variables, styles, components |
Using the chat
Once connected, the plugin panel has a chat box at the bottom. Just type what you want:
- "Create a login screen with email and password fields"
- "Add a navigation bar with 4 menu items"
- "Design a card component with a photo, title, and a blue button"
- (Attach a screenshot) "Recreate this layout in Figma"
To attach an image: click the paperclip icon next to the chat box.
Three modes
The plugin has three tabs at the top:
| Tab | What it does | |---|---| | Chat | Ask questions — the AI answers but does not change your Figma file | | Code | The AI builds and edits your Figma design directly using MCP tools | | Design + Code | Same as Code, but also generates component source code (React/Vue/Svelte) and writes it to your VS Code workspace |
Design + Code mode (dual output)
This is the most powerful mode. From a single prompt in Figma, the AI:
- Creates the component in Figma — with proper auto layout, variants, properties, and design tokens
- Generates matching code — component file, CSS module, and Storybook story
- Writes the code to your VS Code workspace — files appear in
src/components/automatically
The VS Code bridge extension (installed automatically by npm run setup) connects in the background. You'll see a status indicator in the Figma plugin showing whether VS Code is connected. If VS Code is not running, code output still appears in the Figma chat as text.
Switching providers
Use the provider badge in the plugin header to switch between Claude, OpenAI, and Gemini.
- Claude uses the account logged into the Claude CLI
- OpenAI uses the account logged into
codexat the time you switch - Gemini uses the authenticated Gemini CLI account when available, otherwise it falls back to API key mode
Setup registers the same Figma MCP server for Claude, Codex, and Gemini CLI, so switching providers reuses the running bridge and MCP connection automatically.
The active provider will show its signed-in email in the auth strip when available.
Prompt Recipes
Paste these as a starting point — they bake in the guardrails the AI needs to produce native, editable, non-squashed output.
Build a full screen or page
Build [what] as native editable Figma frames. Use auto-layout, my design-system components, and text layers only — no screenshots, no image fills. Target 1440×900 desktop / 390×844 mobile. Every child in an auto-layout parent uses FILL or HUG sizing — never fixed width/height except for icons/avatars.
Recreate a reference image
Recreate the attached screenshot as native editable Figma frames using my design system. Native nodes only — do not insert the image as a fill. Match layout, spacing, and hierarchy; map colors and components to my tokens.
Auto-layout composition (forms, cards, toolbars)
Build [component] with auto-layout. Children use layoutSizingHorizontal="FILL" and layoutSizingVertical="HUG" by default; icons/avatars stay FIXED. Set sizing before calling resize(). No squashing, no clipped text.
Component with variants
Build a production-grade [name] component with auto-layout, design-system tokens, and the following variants: [size=sm|md|lg, state=default|hover|disabled]. After the base state, expand the variant matrix.
Design system–aware layout
Before building, inspect my existing tokens (figma_get_variables) and components (figma_search_components). Build only with what exists; if something is missing, flag it — don't hardcode hex or fonts.
Pro tip: After any build, ask "run figma_layout_intelligence recursively and fix any squashed or mis-sized children." This catches edge cases the initial pass missed.
Troubleshooting
| What went wrong | How to fix it |
|---|---|
| "npm: command not found" | Node.js is not installed — download it from nodejs.org |
| Plugin shows "Server offline" | Run npx @sarjallab09/figma-intelligence start in your terminal |
| Plugin shows setup guide | Follow the on-screen steps — run the setup command in your terminal |
| Plugin not found in Figma | Import it: press Shift+I > Plugins tab > ... menu > "Import plugin from manifest..." > navigate to Documents > Figma Intelligence > manifest.json |
| Can't find the plugin folder | It's in ~/Documents/Figma Intelligence/. On Mac, use Cmd+Shift+G in the file picker and paste the path. |
| Not sure what is broken | Run npx @sarjallab09/figma-intelligence doctor for full diagnostics |
| Chat does nothing / no response | Run claude login / codex login / gemini to authenticate your AI provider |
| Plugin says "Run claude login" but you're already logged in | A relay from an older cached install is still running and can't probe auth correctly. Force a fresh one: npx @sarjallab09/figma-intelligence@latest stop && npx @sarjallab09/figma-intelligence@latest start |
| Gemini doesn't build in Figma | Install Gemini CLI: npm i -g @google/gemini-cli, run gemini to sign in, re-run setup |
| Wrong Figma token / token expired | Re-run npx @sarjallab09/figma-intelligence setup and paste your new token |
| Port 9001 already in use | Run npx @sarjallab09/figma-intelligence stop then start again |
