Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

OpenTelemetry-powered tracing for Node.js services. Batteries-included auto-instrumentation for Express, NestJS, PostgreSQL, Redis, and more.

Install

npm install @saryno/tracer
# or
pnpm add @saryno/tracer

Requires Node 18+.

Usage

import tracer from '@saryno/tracer';

// Initialize once at startup, before anything else
tracer.init({ service: 'my-service' });

// Custom span
await tracer.trace('checkout.process', async (span) => {
  span.setTag('order.id', orderId);
  return await processOrder();
});

// Metrics
tracer.metrics.increment('orders.created', 1, { plan: 'pro' });

Configuration

tracer.init({
  service: 'my-service',             // or OTEL_SERVICE_NAME
  version: '1.0.0',
  env: 'production',                 // or NODE_ENV
  endpoint: 'http://localhost:4318', // or OTEL_EXPORTER_OTLP_ENDPOINT
  debug: false, // OTEL_DEBUG=true for console output
  metricInterval: 10000, // ms between metric exports
  instrumentations: {
    '@opentelemetry/instrumentation-mongodb': false, // disable any instrumentation
  },
});

NestJS / Express

Call tracer.init() before creating your app:

// src/main.ts
import tracer from '@saryno/tracer';
tracer.init({ service: 'my-api' });

const app = await NestFactory.create(AppModule);
await app.listen(3000);

Next.js

// instrumentation.ts
export async function register() {
  if (process.env.NEXT_RUNTIME === 'nodejs') {
    const { default: tracer } = await import('@saryno/tracer');
    tracer.init({ service: 'my-app' });
  }
}

Spans

// Wrap async code in a span
await tracer.trace('db.query', async (span) => {
  span.setTag('sql.table', 'users');
  return db.query('SELECT * FROM users');
});

// Manual span lifecycle
const span = tracer.startSpan('manual.span');
await doWork();
span.end();

// Wrap a function
const traceQuery = tracer.wrap('query', dbQuery);
await traceQuery('SELECT * FROM users');

Metrics

tracer.metrics.increment('requests.total', 1, { method: 'POST' });
tracer.metrics.decrement('queue.pending');
tracer.metrics.gauge('memory.usage', process.memoryUsage().heapUsed);
tracer.metrics.histogram('response.time', elapsed, { endpoint: '/api/users' });
tracer.metrics.timing('work.duration', Date.now() - start);

Auto-instrumented libraries

Enabled by default: HTTP, Express, NestJS, PostgreSQL, MySQL, MySQL2, Redis, ioredis, MongoDB, GraphQL, fetch/undici.

Disabled by default: fs (too noisy).

Debug

OTEL_DEBUG=true node app.js # print spans to console
OTEL_DIAG=true node app.js    # OTel diagnostics logging

Shutdown

await tracer.shutdown(); // flushes pending spans & metrics

Called automatically on SIGTERM.
