Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

HTML and PDF content extraction (Defuddle, unpdf) with a worker-thread pool, and Markdown to HTML

Readme

@searxng-js/sex-page

HTML and PDF content extraction, and Markdown to HTML.

  • extractFromHtmlInline(html, options): main-content extraction with Defuddle on a linkedom document, returning cleaned HTML, Markdown, metadata, links, images and attribute values. PAGE_SCRIPT is the same extractor as a string, for injection into a browser page.
  • pdfToMarkdown(bytes, maxPages?) (unpdf) and joinPages: text per page, with --- separators or <!-- page N --> markers.
  • ExtractPool: runs both in worker threads so a large page cannot block the event loop (size: 0 runs on the calling thread). A job is cut by an AbortSignal (SCRAPE_TIMEOUT when its reason is a TimeoutError, TIMEOUT otherwise) and by taskTimeoutMs (EXTRACT_TIMEOUT); the worker that ran it is replaced.
  • markdownToHtml(markdown): GFM (tables, strikethrough, task lists). Raw HTML inside the Markdown is escaped, never passed through.

Errors are AppErrors, which this package exports (import { AppError } from "@searxng-js/sex-page"; every @searxng-js/sex-* package exports the same class): check them with AppError.isInstance(e), never instanceof; e.code, e.status and e.retryable are plain fields.

Install

npm install @searxng-js/sex-page

Example

import { ExtractPool } from "@searxng-js/sex-page";

const pool = new ExtractPool({ size: 2, taskTimeoutMs: 30_000 });
const page = await pool.html(html, { url: "https://example.com/", onlyMainContent: true, removeBase64Images: true, wantLinks: true, wantImages: false }, AbortSignal.timeout(10_000));
console.log(page.markdown);
await pool.close();

Node

Works on Node 24 and Bun.

  • The worker is dist/extract-worker.js, next to dist/index.js. Bundle both if you bundle the package, or pass workerUrl.
  • On Bun, markdownToHtml uses Bun.markdown. On Node it needs the optional peer dependency marked: npm install marked. Without it markdownToHtml throws a NOT_SUPPORTED error that says so. Nothing else needs it.

Diagnostics

The package writes no log output itself. It publishes { level, msg, fields? } on the node:diagnostics_channel channel searxng-js:sex:page, where level is "debug" | "info" | "warn" | "error", msg a string and fields a plain object (absent when there are none). Nothing is built or published while the channel has no subscriber. The channel name and the message shape are part of the package's public interface. Works on Node and Bun.

import { subscribe } from "node:diagnostics_channel";

subscribe("searxng-js:sex:page", ({ level, msg, fields }: any) => console.error(level, msg, fields));
