Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

Install

npm install @shapeshift-labs/frontier-canvas @shapeshift-labs/frontier-canvas-tools

Usage

import { createCanvasSurface, createCanvasToolRegistry } from '@shapeshift-labs/frontier-canvas';
import {
  createPaintCanvasTool,
  createFillCanvasTool,
  createCanvasToolsAiManifest
} from '@shapeshift-labs/frontier-canvas-tools';

const tools = [
  createPaintCanvasTool({ value: 'grass', cellsPath: '/level/cells' }),
  createFillCanvasTool({ value: 'water', cellsPath: '/level/cells' })
];

const surface = createCanvasSurface({
  session: { activeToolId: 'canvasTools.paint' },
  tools
});

const registry = createCanvasToolRegistry({ tools, activeToolId: surface.session.activeToolId });
const record = registry.dispatch({
  event: {
    type: 'pointermove',
    previousScreen: { x: 0, y: 0 },
    screen: { x: 32, y: 16 }
  },
  context: {
    surface,
    session: surface.session,
    camera: surface.session.camera,
    viewport: surface.session.viewport
  }
});

const aiTools = createCanvasToolsAiManifest({ tools, namespace: 'editor' });

Tool Set

  • createPaintCanvasTool paints grid cells with Bresenham line rasterization between pointer samples.
  • createEraserCanvasTool erases the same rasterized cell path.
  • createLineCanvasTool commits a Bresenham line from gesture start to end and can emit preview patches.
  • createRectangleCanvasTool commits filled or outline rectangles.
  • createFillCanvasTool uses iterative scanline flood fill over a provided cell snapshot.
  • createEntityBrushCanvasTool places normalized entity/item records with snap and flip controls.
  • createMoveCanvasTool and createResizeCanvasTool emit transform patches for normalized item maps.
  • materializeCanvasTransformHandles and hitTestCanvasHandle create reusable move/resize handles.

State Machines

createCanvasToolMachine, selectCanvasTool, setCanvasToolMode, setCanvasToolControl, beginCanvasToolGesture, updateCanvasToolGesture, commitCanvasToolGesture, and cancelCanvasToolGesture model selected tool, per-mode registries, settings, pointer/gesture capture, hover previews, and commit/cancel phases as patchable state.

Tool machines carry a stateScope field. It defaults to local, but can be set to crdt when an app wants selected tool, mode, settings, or committed gesture state to be shared.

CRDT And Local State

createCanvasToolsStateLayout extends the core canvas state layout with tool-specific paths:

  • /canvas/document/cells, /canvas/document/items, and /canvas/document/itemsById default to crdt.
  • /canvas/session/toolMachine, /canvas/session/preview, /canvas/session/activeValue, and /canvas/session/toolTasks default to local.

partitionCanvasToolPatches uses that layout to split tool output before it reaches a CRDT adapter or local store:

const layout = createCanvasToolsStateLayout({
  rootPath: '/editor/canvas',
  machineScope: 'crdt'
});

const { crdt, local } = partitionCanvasToolPatches(record.patches, layout);

This keeps Inkwell-style document edits syncable while pointer capture, hover previews, active brush settings, and async task UI state stay local unless explicitly promoted.

AI And Policy

createCanvasToolActions and createCanvasToolsAiManifest convert canvas tools into frontier-tools action manifests with reads, writes, required capabilities, expected patches, controls, icons, and event metadata. canUseCanvasTool and dispatchCanvasToolWithPermissions provide lightweight capability/policy gating.

Research Transfer

  • Inkwell-style tile tools map to grid-cell patches rather than mutable editor methods.
  • Bresenham line rasterization is used for brush, eraser, and line tools.
  • Flood fill uses an iterative scanline queue instead of recursion.
  • tldraw-style tool/state separation maps to explicit tool-machine records and lifecycle helpers.
  • Fabric/Konva-style transform handles map to reusable handle materialization and hit testing.

Benchmarks

These are Frontier-only package measurements, not competitor comparisons.

npm run bench

The benchmark covers Bresenham strokes, rectangle cell materialization, scanline fill, tool dispatch, transform handles, tool-machine transitions, and AI manifest generation.

Boundary

frontier-canvas-tools depends on frontier, frontier-canvas, and frontier-tools. It does not import DOM, React, Canvas2D, WebGL, workers, state engines, or app-specific editor runtimes.
