Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

Visual editing for sites built on Shapio: field attributes and the preview-frame script.

@shapio/visual

Visual editing for sites built on Shapio: mark the elements that show a field, run one script on the preview page, and in Shapio's preview pane a click on the page focuses that field in the document. Saves re-render the page. No dependencies, no framework required.

npm install @shapio/visual
import { initVisualEditing, shapioAttr } from '@shapio/visual';

// Anywhere a field is rendered (published pages may carry the attributes too):
<h1 {...shapioAttr(article, 'title')}>{article.title}</h1>
<h2 {...shapioAttr(page, `sections/${index}/heading`)}>{section.heading}</h2>

// On the preview page, once:
initVisualEditing({ origin: 'https://cms.example.com', onRefresh: () => renderDraft() });
  • shapioAttr(entry, path, locale?) returns data-shapio-entry, data-shapio-path and data-shapio-locale as an object to spread. entry is a delivery item ({ id, locale }) or an entry ID; path uses API IDs, with list positions and nested fields after slashes.
  • initVisualEditing({ origin, onRefresh? }) runs only inside a frame on a URL with ?shapio-visual=1. It outlines marked elements on hover, posts the clicked field to the parent window with origin as the target (the only origin it talks to), and on a refresh request from that origin calls onRefresh, or reloads the page when there is none. It returns a function that turns it off.
  • Plain script: dist/visual.iife.js (@shapio/visual/global) exposes window.ShapioVisual, and starts by itself when its <script> tag has data-shapio-origin="https://cms.example.com".

The site also sends Content-Security-Policy: frame-ancestors 'self' https://cms.example.com, so only it and Shapio can frame its pages. The full guide, including the security model: Visual editing.
