@shubhra80/rice-score-calculator
A small, standalone RICE prioritization calculator — extracted from Roadmap Tradeoff Visualizer, a portfolio project simulating product roadmap planning.
RICE is a common framework product teams use to prioritize features: Reach × Impact × Confidence ÷ Effort. This package exposes that scoring logic, plus a simple quarter-bucketing function, so any JavaScript project can use the same math without pulling in an entire app.
Install
npm install @shubhra80/rice-score-calculator
Usage
import { riceScore, buildRoadmap } from '@shubhra80/rice-score-calculator';
const feature = { reach: 1000, impact: 3, confidence: 0.8, effort: 5 };
riceScore(feature); // 480
const features = [
{ name: 'SSO', reach: 500, impact: 2, confidence: 0.9, effort: 3 },
{ name: 'Dark mode', reach: 2000, impact: 1, confidence: 0.7, effort: 1 },
// ...more features
];
const { quarters, later } = buildRoadmap(features);
// quarters: [{ label: 'Q1', items: [...], usedEffort, capacity }, ...]
// later: features that didn't fit in Q1–Q4API
riceScore({ reach, impact, confidence, effort })
Returns a single numeric priority score. Higher is higher priority. Returns 0 if effort is 0 or missing (avoids divide-by-zero).
buildRoadmap(features, capacityPerQuarter = 8)
Ranks features by RICE score, then greedily packs them into four fixed-capacity quarters (Q1–Q4) in rank order. Each quarter always accepts at least one item, even if it alone exceeds capacity. Anything that doesn't fit once all four quarters are full spills into a later array.
Why this exists
Built as a hands-on exercise in packaging reusable logic for other developers to use, not just shipping it inside one app — part of a broader practice of building AI-powered product tools with Claude Code.
