Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

@Smelterial/You-Icon

Easy access to Google's Material Symbols. A simple API, fully typed right, down to the icon names.

Wait a Sec! You Probably Want More Than One Component

If not, no worries, go ahead.

If you do want the full Material You library from Smelterial, you should install @Smelterial/Smelterial; it contains this component and more, along with some helpful tools.

Try It Out

See an interactive showcase of this component on the Smelterial Showcase.

Usage

Include links to the Material Symbols styles in your app template.

In future, You-Icon will include the woff2 files and accompanying CSS for Google's Material Symbols internally. Only icon styles which are used are included.

<script>
  import Icon from "@Smelterial/you-icon/Icon.svelte";
</script>

<!--
  Default prop values
-->
<Icon fill={false} weight={400} size={24} grade={0} />

<!--
  Props can be number literals, or numeric strings
-->
<Icon fill={0} weight={400} size={24} grade={0} />
<Icon fill="0" weight="400" size="24" grade="0" />

<!--
  alt text is important! The semantic meaning of your use of an icon may differ
  from what the ligature text would otherwise suggest.
  See https://fonts.google.com/icons?icon.query=deployed_code_history
-->
<Icon
  name="deployed_code_history"
  alt="Waiting for cube"
  fill={false}
  weight={400}
  size={24}
  grade={0}
/>

<!--
  Available styles are outlined, rounded, or sharp.
  See https://fonts.google.com/icons for info
-->
<Icon style="outlined" />
<Icon style="rounded" />
<Icon style="sharp" />

<!--
  You can use `configMode` to apply styling defaults to all icons within it
  (including children of the current page/component)
-->
<Icon configMode fill weight="500" size="40" grade="200">
  <!-- Filled, weight 500, size 40, grade 200 -->
  <Icon />
  <!-- Not filled, weight 500, size 40, grade 200 -->
  <Icon fill={false} />
  <!-- Filled, weight 200, size 24, grade 200 -->
  <Icon size="24" weight={200} />
  <!-- everything passed into the slot(s) inherit these defaults -->
  <slot />
</Icon>

If you have a custom icon set which adhere's to the same specification as Google's Material Symbols, you can make the following changes to use that instead:

<script>
  import Icon from "@Smelterial/you-icon/Icon.svelte";

  const classname = "my-custom-icon-set";
</script>

<Icon style="custom__{classname}">ligature_text_here</Icon>
