Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

v1.0.2

Published

A Stimulus plugin for declarative DOM event listeners via static `listeners` or explicit API.

Readme

[!TIP] Stimulus Listeners helps you wire up DOM event listeners in Stimulus controllers, both declaratively and imperatively, without the need for additional build steps or decorators.

If you can, please consider sponsoring this project to support its development and maintenance.

Features

A zero-build Stimulus plugin that lets you declaratively or imperatively wire up DOM event listeners:

  • Static via static listeners = { … }
  • Imperative via useEventListeners(controller, map)

Features:

  • Auto-cleanup on disconnect
  • Supports options (capture, once, passive) and custom targets
  • Plain JavaScript & TypeScript compatible
  • No decorators or extra tooling needed at runtime

Installation

To install stimulus-listeners, you can use your package manager of choice. Here is the command for npm:

Using npm

npm install @smnandre/stimulus-listeners

Using JSDeliver

If you prefer to use a CDN, you can import it directly from JSDeliver:

import { useListeners, useEventListeners } from 'https://cdn.jsdelivr.net/npm/@smnandre/stimulus-listeners@latest';

Usage

Static listeners

You can define event listeners directly in your Stimulus controller using the static listeners property. This allows you to declaratively specify which events to listen for and the corresponding methods to call.

This approach is straightforward and integrates seamlessly with Stimulus's lifecycle.

import { Controller } from '@hotwired/stimulus';
import { useListeners } from '@smnandre/stimulus-listeners';

export default class extends Controller {

  static listeners = {
    'foo:bar:created': 'onFooBarCreated',
    'foo:bar:closed': 'onFooBarClosed',
  };

  initialize() {
    useListeners(this);
  }

  onFooBarCreated() { /** ... */ }

  onFooBarClosed() { /** ... */ }
}

Listener options

You can also define listeners with options like capture, once, and passive, or specify custom targets.

import { Controller } from '@hotwired/stimulus';
import { useListeners } from '@smnandre/stimulus-listeners';

export default class extends Controller {

  static listeners = {
    'keydown': ['onKeydown', {once: true}],
    'scroll': {method: 'onScroll', passive: true, target: window}
  }

  // ...
}

Imperative listeners

An alternative to the static approach is to use the useEventListeners function, which allows you to set up event listeners imperatively. This is useful for dynamic scenarios where you need to add or remove listeners based on certain conditions.

import { Controller } from '@hotwired/stimulus';
import { useEventListeners } from '@smnandre/stimulus-listeners';

export default class LegacyController extends Controller {
  initialize() {
    useEventListeners(this, {
      'blur': this.animatedValue ? 'animateOnBlur' : 'onBlur',
    });
  }

  animateOnBlur(e: Event) {
    // ...

Testing

To run the test suite:

npm install
npm test

To generate a coverage report:

npm run test:coverage
