Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

Two offline detection engines for AI-adjacent tooling. The core of the Quell VSCode extension.

SecretScanner — what must not leave.

  • 136 regex patterns covering AWS, Google, Azure, OpenAI, Anthropic, Stripe, GitHub, Slack, databases, private keys, and more
  • Shannon entropy fallback for high-randomness tokens that don't match a named pattern

PromptGuard — what must not arrive.

  • Hidden-character detection: Unicode Tags-block smuggling (U+E0000U+E007F), zero-width characters, bidirectional overrides (Trojan Source), variation-selector payloads
  • Decodes smuggled payloads back to cleartext so you can read what was hidden
  • Emoji-aware, so ZWJ sequences, flags and skin-tone modifiers never false-positive
  • Heuristics for model-directed language and homoglyph disguises

McpGuard — MCP server configs, which are both.

  • Hardcoded credentials in env, headers, command and args
  • Injected instructions in tool description fields (tool poisoning)
  • Cleartext transport and remote-server awareness
  • Delegates detection to the two engines above rather than reimplementing it
  • Never puts a secret value in a finding, only the key and the credential type

All three engines:

  • Zero runtime dependencies
  • Work in Node 18+. No VSCode or browser APIs

Note: Placeholders use 16 hex characters ({{SECRET_[a-f0-9]{16}}}), giving 2^64 possible values for collision resistance across large vaults.

findings[].index and .length are UTF-16 offsets into the input, so they map straight onto editor ranges. PromptGuard.strip(text) is available on its own when you only want remediation, and PromptGuard.decodeTagPayload(raw) decodes a Tags-block run directly.

scanConfig never throws: malformed JSON returns a finding with parsed: false rather than an exception, because it is meant to run over files you did not vet. Findings carry the offending key and the credential type, never the value.

Each PromptGuard detector family can be disabled independently via enableUnicodeChecks, enableInstructionChecks and enableHomoglyphChecks. The unicode family is deterministic and effectively false-positive free; the instruction family is heuristic and will fire on security documentation that quotes injection phrases, so it is the one to whitelist or disable in a docs pipeline.

redactTestKeys

By default (false), officially-published test/demo credentials (e.g. AKIAIOSFODNN7EXAMPLE, sk_test_...) are left alone. These appear in READMEs, tutorials, and documentation and are intentionally safe.

Set to true to treat them like any other secret:

SecretScanner.redact(text, { ...DEFAULT_CONFIG, redactTestKeys: true });

Status

Currently versioned as 0.1.0 and not yet published to npm. Distributed as source alongside the Quell VSCode extension. Standalone npm publish is planned.
