Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

Framework-agnostic JavaScript/TypeScript SDK for the Sphyra map & geocoding API

Readme

Overview

Sphyra is a self-hosted OpenStreetMap stack for Armenia — vector tiles, geocoding, routing, search, and more. @sphyra/js is the official client for browser and Node apps: one typed surface for the REST API, plus helpers to render a signed MapLibre map without leaking your API key into style JSON.

What you get out of the box

  • SphyraClient — geocoding, tiles, routing, search, static images, and every Phase-10 service
  • createSphyraMap() — signed style + runtime day/dusk/night presets and 2D/3D switching
  • Map helpers — markers, popups, clustering, navigation/geolocate/scale controls
  • Full TypeScript types in dist/index.d.ts

Runnable reference: examples/web-demo/ — local Vite demo with the full Standard style and every API wired up.

Prerequisites

Start the local Sphyra stack before your first integration test:

cd sphyra/api
docker compose up -d
curl http://localhost:4000/health   # → {"status":"ok"}

The dev key sphyra_dev_local is seeded automatically (DevApiKeySeeder). Never commit a production key.

Environments

| Environment | baseUrl | apiKey | |-------------|-----------|----------| | Local (first run) | http://localhost:4000 | sphyra_dev_local | | Production | https://sphyra.kidup.am | SPHYRA_API_KEY (from your secret store) |

Only baseUrl and apiKey change between local and production.

Install

pnpm add @sphyra/js maplibre-gl

| Package | Role | |---------|------| | maplibre-gl ^5.24.0 | Required peer — map rendering (5.x for the themed sky and the globe; see ADR-008) | | @mapbox/mapbox-gl-draw ^1.4.3 | Optional peer — only for createDrawControl() |

Quickstart

import { SphyraClient } from "@sphyra/js";

const client = new SphyraClient({
  baseUrl: "http://localhost:4000",
  apiKey: "sphyra_dev_local",
});

const { status } = await client.healthCheck();
console.log(status); // "ok"
<link href="https://unpkg.com/maplibre-gl@5/dist/maplibre-gl.css" rel="stylesheet" />
<div id="map" style="width:100%;height:400px"></div>
<script type="module">
  import { SphyraClient } from "./node_modules/@sphyra/js/dist/index.js";

  const client = new SphyraClient({
    baseUrl: "http://localhost:4000",
    apiKey: "sphyra_dev_local",
  });
</script>
<link href="https://unpkg.com/maplibre-gl@5/dist/maplibre-gl.css" rel="stylesheet" />
<script src="./node_modules/@sphyra/js/dist/index.umd.js"></script>
<script>
  const client = new Sphyra.SphyraClient({
    baseUrl: "http://localhost:4000",
    apiKey: "sphyra_dev_local",
  });
</script>

Exports are available on the global Sphyra object.

import { SphyraClient } from "@sphyra/js";

const client = new SphyraClient({
  baseUrl: "http://localhost:4000",
  apiKey: "sphyra_dev_local",
});

const results = await client.forwardGeocode({ q: "Երևան", lang: "hy", limit: 3 });
console.log(results[0]?.displayName);

Map rendering

createSphyraMap() fetches the signed MapLibre style once, signs tile and asset requests in-process, and keeps your API key out of the style object.

import "maplibre-gl/dist/maplibre-gl.css";
import {
  SphyraClient,
  createSphyraMap,
  addMarker,
  addPopup,
  addNavigationControl,
  addGeolocateControl,
  addScaleControl,
} from "@sphyra/js";

const client = new SphyraClient({
  baseUrl: "http://localhost:4000",
  apiKey: "sphyra_dev_local",
});

const handle = await createSphyraMap("map", {
  client,
  preset: "day", // "day" | "dusk" | "night"
  mode: "3d",                 // "2d" | "3d"
  center: [44.5152, 40.1872], // [lon, lat] — Yerevan
  zoom: 13,
  onLoad: (map) => {
    addNavigationControl(map);
    addGeolocateControl(map);
    addScaleControl(map);

    const popup = addPopup(map, {
      lngLat: [44.5152, 40.1872],
      html: "<strong>Republic Square</strong>",
      open: false,
    });

    addMarker(map, {
      lngLat: [44.5152, 40.1872],
      color: "#e63946",
      onClick: () => popup.open(),
    });
  },
});

handle.setPreset("night"); // runtime — no re-fetch
handle.setMode("2d");
handle.destroy();

Lower-level: client.getTileConfig() and client.getMapStyle({ preset, mode }) if you wire MapLibre yourself. Most apps should use createSphyraMap().

1.2.0 — Mapbox Standard look

The style this SDK renders was rebuilt for Mapbox Standard parity (S-1.0.0-11-023). What changed for consumers:

  • New layer ids. Buildings are now a stack — buildings-ao, buildings-ao-contact (ground shadows), buildings-3d (walls) and buildings-3d-roof (roof-edge contour). If you toggle layers by id, use metadata["sphyra:layerGroups"] instead of hard-coded lists.
  • POIs draw above the buildings so a building never covers the labels in front of it. apply3dGroundDepth() / apply3dGroundDepthToMap() keep that order; call them after adding your own layers if you insert into the middle of the stack.
  • Preset colours look wrong in isolation and right on screen — they are fitted through MapLibre's extrusion lighting (see the Map-Style-Standard documentation page). Change them through the preset table, not by editing layer paint.
  • Zoom ranges match the tile server: buildings and POIs come from z18 tiles and MapLibre overzooms above. Asking for z19+ tiles used to 404 and buildings vanished while zooming.
  • Tiles are served gzipped and cacheable; a viewport is roughly half the bytes it was.
  • maplibre-gl moves to ^5.24.0 (peer). This is the breaking part of 1.2.0: the themed sky and the globe do not exist before MapLibre 5. Upgrading is a version bump for most apps — v5 keeps the default export and the API surface v4 had. (v6 removes the default export; the SDK does not support it yet.)
  • The camera tilts to 85°, not 60°. MapLibre's default stopped short of the horizon, so no amount of dragging the compass ever showed the sky. createSphyraMap now matches Mapbox Standard; pass maxPitch to override.
  • A sky, a globe and stars. The style now carries a sky per preset and a projection that shows a globe below z4 and mercator from z6, in both 2D and 3D. createSphyraMap paints the container with metadata["sphyra:spaceColor"] (MapLibre leaves space around the globe transparent) and applyPresetToMap adds the starfield — MapLibre draws no stars, so the SDK ships one as a custom layer. If you build the map yourself instead of using createSphyraMap, call ensureStarfieldOnMap(map, style.metadata["sphyra:presets"][preset].stars) and set the container background yourself.

Geocoding

import { SphyraClient } from "@sphyra/js";

const client = new SphyraClient({
  baseUrl: "http://localhost:4000",
  apiKey: "sphyra_dev_local",
});

// Reverse — coordinates → address (default lang: "hy")
const place = await client.reverseGeocode({
  lat: 40.1872,
  lon: 44.5152,
  lang: "hy",
});
// place.displayName → "Հանրապետության հրապարակ, Երևան, Հայաստան"

// Forward — text → ranked hits
const hits = await client.forwardGeocode({
  q: "Աբովյան",
  lang: "hy",
  limit: 5,
});

Supported languages: "hy" · "en" · "ru".

Error handling

API failures throw SphyraError with code, message, and optional statusCode:

import { SphyraError } from "@sphyra/js";

try {
  await client.reverseGeocode({ lat: 40.18, lon: 44.51 });
} catch (err) {
  if (err instanceof SphyraError) {
    console.error(err.code, err.statusCode, err.message);
    // e.g. INVALID_API_KEY · 401
  }
}

| Behaviour | Detail | |-----------|--------| | Retries | 5xx, TIMEOUT, NETWORK — up to 3× with 1s / 2s / 4s backoff | | No retry | 4xx client errors fail immediately | | Timeout | Default 10 000 ms — override via timeout on SphyraClient |

Runnable demo

examples/web-demo/ is the canonical integration sample: Standard style (labels, sprites, 3D buildings, terrain), presets, markers, clustering, routing, search, and every Phase-10 service tab.

# From this repo — local stack must be running
pnpm install && pnpm build
cd examples/web-demo
pnpm install && pnpm dev    # → http://localhost:5173

The demo proxies /api, /tiles, and /health to http://localhost:4000 through Vite so signed URLs work without CORS.

TypeScript

All public types ship in dist/index.d.ts:

| Type | Purpose | |------|---------| | SphyraClientOptions | Client constructor | | ReverseGeocodeResult / GeocodeResult | Geocoding responses | | GeocodeLang | "hy" | "en" | "ru" | | TileConfigResponse | Signed tile URLs + expiry | | CreateSphyraMapOptions / SphyraMapHandle | Map helper | | StylePreset / StyleMode | Light preset and 2D/3D mode |

pnpm typecheck

Commit hygiene

This repository must show only its human authors in the contributor list. A local hook rejects AI co-author trailers before a commit is created — enable it once per clone:

git config core.hooksPath .githooks

The same check runs in CI (no-ai-trailers) over every commit in a merge/pull request range, so a bypassed local hook still fails the pipeline.
