Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

TOTP multi-factor authentication for SpinaJS.

Turning TOTP on

The package lists no MFA step in its config: arrays concatenate across config files, so a listed step could not be turned off. An app enables TOTP with:

  1. { name: 'totp', service: 'TotpMfaStep' } in its own authn.mfa.steps;
  2. authn.mfa.encryptionKey.secret: 32 random bytes as 64 hex characters, or as base64 / base64url (44 or 43 characters). On rotation, move the old key to authn.mfa.encryptionKey.previous so stored secrets still decrypt;
  3. import '@spinajs/authn-totp/db'; once in the app. This registers DbMfaSecretStore as the MfaSecretStore. It keeps secrets and recovery codes in authn-orm's authn_mfa and authn_recovery_code tables through authn-orm's DbMfaStore.

The import loads @spinajs/authn-orm, and with it authn-orm's migrations and DB stores. When the default connection has Migration.OnStartup, resolving the Orm runs the authn-orm data migration, which moves 2.x TOTP secrets into authn_mfa. The root entry of this package loads none of this; it uses only authn-orm's cipher and identityKey (the side-effect-free /cipher and /identity subpaths), so rows the migration wrote decrypt under the same key. Without step 3, or another registered MfaSecretStore, the step fails with an error naming MfaSecretStore. Tests register MemoryMfaSecretStore as MfaSecretStore.

Warning. The same data migration deletes the 2.x 2fa:*, user:2fa:*, user:login:* and user:pwd_reset:* keys from users_metadata. Their 2.x reset links stop working, and the 2.x failed-login count and lock go with user:login:*.

The package ships no 2.x rbac.twoFactorAuth keys; move any of your own with spinajs-authz-convert.

authn:mfa-reset <login> removes an account's enrolment and recovery codes and prints no secret. authn:mfa-qr <secretOrUrl> prints a QR code for a secret or an otpauth URL (rbac:2fa-qr remains an alias).
