Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

Public beta Drizzle ORM provider for Workhorse

Readme

@stablemates/workhorse-drizzle

The Drizzle ORM provider for enqueuing Workhorse tasks through Drizzle transactions.

Public beta: Workhorse is usable for evaluation and early production adoption. A 0.x minor release may change behaviour, so read the changelog before you upgrade. It will not ask you to recreate your database: migrations are ordered, and inside a major line a migration only adds, so a running deployment upgrades in place.

Install

npm install @stablemates/workhorse @stablemates/workhorse-drizzle drizzle-orm pg

Enqueue in a transaction

import { Pool } from "@stablemates/workhorse";
import { createDrizzleAdapter } from "@stablemates/workhorse-drizzle";
import { drizzle } from "drizzle-orm/node-postgres";

const pool = new Pool({ connectionString: process.env.DATABASE_URL });
const db = drizzle({ client: pool });
const workhorse = createDrizzleAdapter(db, { close: () => pool.end() });

await db.transaction(async (tx) => {
  // Application writes through tx...
  await workhorse.forTransaction(tx).enqueue("email.send", { recipient: "[email protected]" });
});

Use a transaction queue only inside its transaction

Create the queue from forTransaction(tx) inside the callback and drop it when the callback returns. Drizzle gives the adapter no signal when a transaction ends, so the adapter cannot invalidate a queue that outlives it. Knex differs: its adapter rejects a completed transaction.

Suppose a callback stores workhorse.forTransaction(tx) in a variable, and Drizzle commits and releases the connection. A later enqueue through that variable runs on the released connection:

  • When the connection sits idle in the pool, the enqueue commits on its own.
  • When another db.transaction has borrowed the connection, the enqueue joins that transaction and follows its commit or rollback.

Neither outcome belongs to the original transaction, and Workhorse reports no error for either.

Package boundary

The adapter never closes caller-owned database resources unless close is configured. Workhorse core owns schema installation and changes. Database errors are rethrown as DrizzleQueryError, with the original error in cause and its PostgreSQL code copied to code when available.
