Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

Vite plugin for svjeez: import a scene with ?svjeez and get an animated SVG's URL, with poster stills.

Readme

@svjeez/vite

A Vite plugin for svjeez scenes. Import a scene with ?svjeez, and the plugin compiles it while the app builds. The page gets the SVG's URL and size. The browser bundle never contains svjeez or the scene's code.

The plugin works with any framework that builds with Vite, such as React, Svelte, Vue, or Solid.

Install

npm i -D @svjeez/vite svjeez

On Node 20, use npm 11, pnpm or bun. npm 10, the npm that ships with Node 20, crashes while it installs Vite 8 (Cannot read properties of null (reading 'edgesOut')). Run npm i -g npm@11 to update it.

Posters need playwright-core and a Chromium build:

npm i -D playwright-core
npx playwright-core install chromium-headless-shell

Use

Add the plugin to vite.config.ts:

import svjeez from "@svjeez/vite";
import { defineConfig } from "vite";

export default defineConfig({ plugins: [svjeez({ posters: { scale: 2 } })] });

Add the types to a declaration file, such as src/vite-env.d.ts:

/// <reference types="@svjeez/vite/client" />

Import a scene. Its default export is a function that returns render()'s SVG string.

import hero from "./scenes/hero.tsx?svjeez";

<img src={hero.src} width={hero.width} height={hero.height} alt={hero.desc || hero.title} />;

An import gives { src, width, height, title, desc }. title and desc come from the SVG's <title> and <desc>.

Add &posters to get a still frame per color scheme, for example as a fallback for prefers-reduced-motion:

import hero from "./scenes/hero.tsx?svjeez&posters";

<picture>
  <source srcSet={hero.posters.dark} media="(prefers-color-scheme: dark)" />
  <img src={hero.posters.light} width={hero.width} height={hero.height} alt={hero.desc} />
</picture>;

How it works

  • The scene runs in Node, in a Vite environment of its own. That environment compiles JSX as svjeez, so a scene needs no JSX pragma, even in a React app. It resolves imports the way the app's server environment does, with the app's aliases.
  • The dev server serves each file under /_svjeez/. It reloads the page when the scene, or any file the scene imports, changes.
  • The build emits the SVG and the posters as assets, so they get hashed names in the build output.
  • Posters render in headless Chromium and are cached in Vite's cache directory, under svjeez/.

Options

| Option | Description | | --- | --- | | posters.scale | Device pixels per SVG pixel. Default 1. | | posters.quality | WebP quality from 0 to 1. Default 0.8. | | posters.background | CSS background behind the scene. Default Canvas, the page color of the scheme. | | cacheDir | Where posters are kept between runs. Default svjeez/ in Vite's cache directory. |
