Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

Playwright fixture, matchers, recorder and reporter for testing WebMCP tool surfaces.

Playwright test and expect with a webmcp fixture for testing WebMCP tool surfaces: discover tools in every frame, call them, record what page scripts and agents call, lint the surface, run schema-driven smoke checks, keep a tool contract next to the test, mock tools, drive Chrome's on-device model against them, and run webmcp-evals cases with the CLI's own semantics.

npm install --save-dev @swissspidy/playwright-webmcp @swissspidy/webmcp-lint @playwright/test

The tests run against the browser's own WebMCP implementation. Playwright's Chromium has it behind a flag:

// playwright.config.ts
import { defineConfig } from "@playwright/test";

export default defineConfig({
  use: { launchOptions: { args: ["--enable-features=WebMCP"] } },
});
import { test, expect } from "@swissspidy/playwright-webmcp";

test("shop exposes usable tools", async ({ page, webmcp }) => {
  await page.goto("/");

  await expect(webmcp).toHaveTool("search_products", {
    description: /catalogue/,
    inputSchema: { required: ["query"], properties: { query: { type: "string" } } },
  });
  await expect(webmcp).toPassLint({ failOn: "warning" });
  await expect(webmcp).toMatchToolContract();

  const { products } = await webmcp.call("search_products", { query: "shirt" });
  await webmcp.call("add_to_cart", { productId: products[0].id, quantity: 2 });

  expect(webmcp).toHaveCalledTool("add_to_cart", { quantity: { $gte: 1 } });
  expect(webmcp).toMatchCalls([
    { functionName: "search_products" },
    { functionName: "add_to_cart" },
  ]);
});

Matchers: toHaveTool, toPassLint, toPassSmoke, toMatchToolContract, toReachTool, toHaveToolCoverage, toHaveAgentReadinessScore, toRegisterToolsWithin, toHaveCalledTool, toMatchCalls, and toPassEval for agents.

Agents: the lazy promptApi fixture drives Chrome's on-device model against the page's tools, and toolsForAgent(webmcp) hands the same tools as callables to any model or framework you run from Node. expect(webmcp).toPassEval(evalCase, { agent }) takes a Vercel AI SDK ToolLoopAgent, any object with generate() or run(), or an async function, and judges the calls the fixture recorded.

Suite-wide reports (tools.json for webmcp-evals local, coverage.json, TOOLS.md) come from the bundled reporter: reporter: [["list"], ["@swissspidy/playwright-webmcp/reporter", { outputDir: ".webmcp-report" }]].

Fixture options: test.use({ webmcpOptions: { record: true, lint: {...}, cdp: "auto" | "never" } }). Set WEBMCP_CDP=http://localhost:9222 to run against a Chrome you launched yourself.

The full fixture and matcher reference, the rule list, and the on-device model harness are documented in the repository README. For the same rules in the editor and on eslint runs, see @swissspidy/eslint-plugin-webmcp; to audit a URL without a test suite, see @swissspidy/webmcp-audit.
