From toolbar
Click the image button → enter URL, alt text, width, height, style options.
Drag & drop from browser
Drag an image from another tab/page → URL is extracted and image inserted directly.
Drag & drop from desktop
- If
uploadoption is configured → file is uploaded automatically, image inserted with returned URL - If not → a modal opens to enter the URL manually
Paste from clipboard
Paste an image copied from a web page → inserted directly if a URL is available.
Visual resize
Click any image in the editor to show:
- 8 drag handles (corners keep aspect ratio, edges are free, Shift = force proportional)
- Mini toolbar: float left/center/right, quick sizes 25%/50%/75%/100%/Auto, Properties button
- Size indicator (live px dimensions)
Source editor
Click the </> button to switch to source mode:
- Syntax highlighting — HTML tags, attributes, Twig variables
{{ }}and blocks{% %}(Catppuccin Mocha palette) - Format HTML button (position 2, visible only in source mode) — auto-indents the HTML without touching Mermaid blocks
- Scroll synced between the textarea and the highlight layer
- CSS isolation — inherits no
text-shadow/filterfrom the host page
Mermaid diagrams (opt-in)
Render diagrams from text using Mermaid — zero bundle impact since you inject your own instance.
import mermaid from 'mermaid';
mermaid.initialize({ startOnLoad: false });
new WysiwygEditor({
mermaid,
toolbar: { mermaid: true },
});- Click the flowchart button → textarea to write Mermaid syntax
- Supports pasting fenced code blocks (
```mermaid ... ```) — backticks are stripped automatically - Click an existing diagram in the editor → re-opens the modal with the code pre-filled
- Diagram is stored as
<div class="be-mermaid" data-mermaid-code="...">SVG</div> - Errors are displayed inline in the modal (not as a blocking alert)
Math formulas — KaTeX (opt-in)
Render LaTeX math formulas using KaTeX — zero bundle impact since you inject your own instance.
import katex from 'katex';
import 'katex/dist/katex.min.css';
new WysiwygEditor({
katex,
toolbar: { math: true },
});- Click the Σ button → enter LaTeX formula (e.g.
\frac{a}{b}) - Delimiter stripping:
$$...$$or$...$wrappers are removed automatically - Display mode (block, centered) or Inline mode (in-text)
- Click an existing formula → re-opens the modal with the code pre-filled
- Formula stored as
<div|span class="be-math" data-math-code="..." data-math-display="1|0"> - Syntax errors are displayed inline in the modal
Éditeur SVG (opt-in, zero dépendance)
Dessinez et annotez directement dans le contenu sans aucune dépendance externe.
new WysiwygEditor({
toolbar: { draw: true },
});Activer le bouton dessin dans la toolbar → une fenêtre modale s'ouvre (1 200 × 860 px).
Excalidraw drawings (opt-in)
Insert freehand drawings using Excalidraw — React and ReactDOM must be provided since Excalidraw is a React component.
import { Excalidraw, exportToSvg } from '@excalidraw/excalidraw';
import '@excalidraw/excalidraw/index.css';
import React from 'react';
import ReactDOM from 'react-dom/client';
new WysiwygEditor({
excalidraw: { Excalidraw, exportToSvg, React, ReactDOM },
toolbar: { excalidraw: true },
});- Click the pencil button → centered modal (1100 × 80 vh) with the Excalidraw canvas
- Click outside the modal or Cancel to dismiss
<div class="be-excalidraw" data-excalidraw-state="...">SVG</div> - Hamburger menu (Open/Save/Export) and Library panel hidden — not relevant in editor context
Element inspector
Hover any block element in the editor to reveal a floating toolbar:
- Properties — opens a modal with tabs Principal / Attributs / Style for
<img>,<a>,<p>,<div>,<pre>,<table>and all common elements - Raw CSS textarea — paste multi-line CSS (with or without selector wrapper) directly into the Style tab
- Move up / down — reorder blocks
To fully disable the Properties button and modal (floating toolbar, images and SVG drawings):
new WysiwygEditor({
toolbar: { elementProps: false }
})Resize
Drag the grip icon in the bottom-right corner of the status bar to resize the editor height. The parent container (#editor-wrap or equivalent) is resized.
Twig snippets (opt-in)
Enable with toolbar: { twig: true }. Opens a panel with ready-made snippets in 6 built-in categories (variables, conditions, loops, filters, client, invoice). Snippets are inserted as plain text so Twig templating engines can process them.
Custom snippets injection
Add project-specific snippets via twigSnippets. They are appended after the built-in ones.
import type { WysiwygTwigSnippet } from '@synapxlab/wysiwyg';
new WysiwygEditor({
toolbar: { twig: true },
twigSnippets: [
{ cat: 'Mon projet', label: '{{ user.name }}', code: '{{ user.name }}' },
{ cat: 'Mon projet', label: '|myFilter', code: '{{ value|myFilter }}' },
{ cat: 'Dates', label: '{{year}}', code: '{{year}}' },
],
});Grid layout
Click the grid button to open a preset picker:
- 12 presets: 1 col, 2 equal, 3 equal, 4 equal, 1/3+2/3, 2/3+1/3, 1/4+3/4, sidebar-left, sidebar-right, etc.
- Gap selector: 0 / 8 / 16 / 24 / 32 px
- Inserts a
display:flexrow with proportionalflex:Ncolumns, visible dashed borders in editor only
Table
Insert via toolbar → configure rows/columns/headers. Once in the editor:
- Hover a cell → inline mini toolbar: merge right, merge down, split, add/remove row/column, delete
- Click a cell → edit content directly
CSS variables (theming)
All variables are scoped to .be-wysiwyg. Override them on the container or globally:
.be-wysiwyg {
--be-primary: #4f46e5;
--be-danger: #ef4444;
--be-bg: #f8f9fa;
--be-surface: #ffffff;
--be-radius: 6px;
--be-font: system-ui, -apple-system, sans-serif;
--be-font-mono: 'Courier New', monospace;
--be-transition: 150ms ease;
}Rendering content outside the editor
The HTML produced by editor.getValue() is standard HTML with a few editor-specific classes (.be-mermaid, .be-math, .be-qr, .be-draw). To display it correctly outside the editor, wrap it in a .wysiwyg_view container and apply the following CSS.
Server-side (Twig / PHP)
{# Twig #}
<div class="wysiwyg_view">
If your content may include math formulas (.be-math), load the KaTeX stylesheet:
<link rel="stylesheet" href="https://cdn.jsdelivr.net/npm/[email protected]/dist/katex.min.css" crossorigin="anonymous" />No JavaScript required
All special elements (Mermaid diagrams, SVG drawings, QR codes, KaTeX formulas) are stored with their SVG / HTML already inlined inside the element. No client-side JavaScript is needed to display them — the content is static and fully compatible with server-side rendering.
TypeScript
Full type declarations are included. Compatible with TypeScript 5 and 6.
When to choose @synapxlab/wysiwyg:
- You need a pagebuilder (grid layout, structured blocks) not just rich text
- You want zero runtime dependencies — no licensing fees, no heavy bundle
- You work with Twig templates and need snippet injection
- You need native SVG drawing or Mermaid/KaTeX without extra setup
- You want a drop-in editor owned entirely by your team (MIT, fork freely)
When CKEditor / TinyMCE may be a better fit:
- You need advanced collaborative editing (real-time multi-user)
- You rely on a large existing plugin ecosystem
- Your team is already deeply integrated with one of those platforms
Browser support
Modern browsers (Chrome 90+, Firefox 90+, Safari 15+, Edge 90+).
Uses contenteditable, Selection / Range APIs, CSS color-mix().
Textarea integration pattern (Adliss)
Helper functions used in the Adliss ERP to manage multiple wysiwyg instances bound to named <textarea> elements.
Helpers
/** Find a textarea by name or id. */
const getTextareaEditor = (instanceName) => {
return document.querySelector(`textarea[name='${instanceName}'], textarea#${instanceName}`);
}
/** Apply a minimum height to the editor and its inner zones. */
const applyWysiHeight = (editor, height) => {
const size = `${Number(height) || 400}px`;
editor.el.style.minHeight = size;
const editorArea = editor.el.querySelector('.be-wysiwyg__editor');
const sourceArea = editor.el.querySelector('.be-wysiwyg__source-wrap');
if (editorArea) editorArea.style.minHeight = size;
if (sourceArea) sourceArea.style.minHeight = size;
}
/**
* Mount a WysiwygEditor instance right after the textarea.
* - Hides the original textarea
* - Syncs the value on every onChange
* - Syncs all instances on form submit
*/
const createWysiInstance = (textarea, instanceName, preset, height) => {
const mount = document.createElement('div');
mount.className = 'adliss-wysiwyg-host';
mount.dataset.instance = instanceName;
textarea.insertAdjacentElement('afterend', mount);
textarea.style.display = 'none';
textarea.dataset.wysiMounted = '1';
const editor = new WysiwygEditor({
...(WYSI_PRESETS[preset] || WYSI_PRESETS.full),
});
mount.appendChild(editor.el);
applyWysiHeight(editor, height);
editor.onChange = () => { textarea.value = editor.getValue(); };
