Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

@tango-ts/admin-ui

The Tango admin UI: a prebuilt, schema-driven React SPA built with shadcn/ui and Tailwind. It is the browser half of @tango-ts/admin — one generic app for every project, driven entirely by the admin /meta/ endpoint at runtime.

Never import this package from server code. It ships compiled static assets (dist/) meant to be served from a CDN or static directory. Keeping it out of the server import graph is what keeps Vercel function bundles free of React, and the monorepo enforces that with lint, manifest, and bundle-trace guards.

Serving the UI

The published package contains only dist/ (index.html + hashed assets). The SPA uses hash routing and relative asset URLs, so it works from any mount point with zero server rewrites:

  • Vercel: copy node_modules/@tango-ts/admin-ui/dist into public/admin/ during the build. Static files win over the catch-all rewrite, so the UI is served from the CDN and adds nothing to the function bundle.
  • Containers: serve the same directory with any static file middleware.

By default the app talks to /admin/api (where addAdminRoutes mounts). Override with a global before the bundle loads:

<script>window.__TANGO_ADMIN__ = { apiBase: '/internal/admin/api' }</script>

Development

yarn workspace @tango-ts/admin-ui dev

The dev server proxies /admin/api to http://127.0.0.1:8000, so run a Tango project with addAdminRoutes locally and log in with a staff user (createSuperuser).

What it renders

Everything comes from the meta document:

  • Sidebar of registered models
  • List views with the configured listDisplay columns, search (searchFields), boolean/lookup filters (listFilters), and pagination
  • Create/edit forms with widgets per column type, read-only fields, per-field validation errors straight from the serializer
  • Foreign-key pickers that search the related model's admin endpoint and show its display field
  • Staff login backed by the contrib-auth token model
