Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

React 19 bindings for @tasfer/editor — a useEditor hook, an <Editor> component, and live state subscriptions.

Readme

@tasfer/react

React 19 bindings for @tasfer/editor, the headless canvas editor engine. A thin layer over the same imperative handle — not a fork of it.

Everything is per-instance: no module-level state, so multiple editors can live on one page.

Install

npm install @tasfer/editor @tasfer/react

react and react-dom are peer dependencies, not a bundled copy.

Usage

The <Editor> component owns and sizes its host element for you:

import { Editor } from "@tasfer/react";

export default function App() {
  return (
    <Editor
      markdown={"# Hello\n\nStart typing — *markdown* shortcuts just work."}
      autofocus
      style={{ height: "70vh" }}
      onChange={(markdown) => localStorage.setItem("draft", markdown)}
    />
  );
}

For full control over the host element, use the hook and render the container yourself:

import { useEditor } from "@tasfer/react";

const { containerRef, editor } = useEditor({ markdown: "# Title" });
return <div ref={containerRef} className="my-editor" />;

Reading state

useEditorState is a useSyncExternalStore subscription — it re-renders your component whenever the editor's snapshot is replaced, so a toolbar stays in sync without any subscription of your own. It is null until the editor exists.

import { useEditorState } from "@tasfer/react";

function Toolbar({ editor }) {
  const state = useEditorState(editor);
  const active = state?.activeMarks ?? new Set();

  return (
    <button
      aria-pressed={active.has("strong")}
      onClick={() => editor?.change((c) => c.setMark("strong"))}
    >
      Bold
    </button>
  );
}

There is no separate React command API: you call change on the same handle — the editor from useEditor, or the one onReady gives you.

Exports

  • useEditor — creates and owns a TasferEditor, returns { containerRef, editor }.
  • Editor — drop-in component wrapping useEditor; reports the editor via onReady.
  • useEditorState — live selection / active-mark snapshot.
  • useEditorMarkdown — the document as markdown, re-read on every edit.

Editor options are read once at mount; reconfigure at runtime through the imperative handle (setTheme, setMarkdown, change, …).
