Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

Create React Native Boilerplate

A simple CLI tool to generate a new project from the @tedckh/react-native-boilerplate.

Usage

To create a new project, run the following command in your terminal:

npx @tedckh/create-react-native-boilerplate <your-project-name>

What it does

The script will create a new directory with your chosen project name and perform the following steps:

  1. Clones the latest version of the react-native-boilerplate.
  2. Updates the package.json, app.json, index.js, Podfile, Xcode project files (.pbxproj, .xcscheme), Android build files (.gradle, AndroidManifest.xml), and Java/Kotlin source folder structure with your new project name and bundle identifier.
  3. Updates the internal package scope names (e.g., @my-rn-boilerplate to @your-project-name).
  4. Installs all JavaScript dependencies (npm install).
  5. Installs iOS native dependencies (pod install).
  6. Initializes a new git repository.

Once it's finished, your new project is ready to go with a complete Dockerized environment for both development and production.

Important Notes

iOS Development on macOS

The project creation script includes a step to run pod install for iOS native dependencies. This command is part of CocoaPods and only runs on macOS.

If you are creating a project on a non-macOS operating system (e.g., Windows or Linux), the script will automatically skip this step. You will need to run pod install manually on a macOS machine if you intend to build for iOS.

A Note on iOS Bundle Identifiers

When you build the iOS app for the first time, Xcode may report an error that the "Bundle Identifier is not available." This happens if the generated ID (e.g., com.demoapp) is too generic and has already been registered by another developer.

Solution:

  1. In Xcode, open the project settings and go to the Signing & Capabilities tab.
  2. In the "Bundle Identifier" field, change the value to something unique, usually in reverse domain name format.
  3. For example, change com.demoapp to com.yourname.demoapp or com.yourcompany.demoapp.

This will resolve the registration error and allow you to build the app.
