Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

Pure-native swash text rasterizer for termless — cell grid → RGBA via napi-rs, browser-grade color-emoji fidelity with no Skia

Readme

@termless/swash-render

Pure-native swash text rasterizer for termless — a napi-rs binding that turns a terminal cell grid into an RGBA bitmap.

swash is a pure-Rust, browser-grade headless text rasterizer (the cosmic-text / Linebender lineage): full shaping, TrueType + CFF outlines, and — the reason this package exists — color emoji across sbix / CBDT / COLR. termless's canvas (Skia via @napi-rs/canvas) and resvg renderers both lose the system color-emoji table and fall back to monochrome line-art; swash reads the color tables directly, so 📁 / 📋 / ✅ / 🔥 render in full color.

The native binding is ~1.3 MB — far smaller than @napi-rs/canvas's ~26 MB.

Why a cell-grid API (not SVG)

swash does shaping + glyph rasterization only; it has no cell-grid layout layer. This crate ports the fixed-pitch grid walk (per-cell fg/bg, wide-char advance) — see native/src/lib.rs. termless already owns the cell grid (it feeds both the canvas and resvg renderers), so the public API consumes that grid directly rather than round-tripping through SVG, which would flatten away the very color information swash exists to preserve.

Build

bun run build:prebuild     # napi-rs platform-suffixed .node, e.g. darwin-arm64

The package loader also accepts the legacy local development binary termless-swash-render.node, produced with:

bun run build:native
bun run postbuild:native

Published packages must not include native/target; platform binaries belong in napi-rs optional packages or release artifacts, not in the main tarball.

Usage

import { renderCells } from "@termless/swash-render"

// `term` is any termless Terminal
const bitmap = renderCells(term) // { pixels, width, height }

Or via the termless renderer enum:

termless record --renderer swash -o out.png
await term.screenshot({ renderer: "swash" })
