Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

API Spector private runner: monitor internal/local APIs the cloud cannot reach, with no inbound connections.

Readme

@testsmith/api-spector-agent

The API Spector private runner. It monitors your local and internal APIs - things API Spector Cloud can never reach (localhost, 10.x, staging behind a VPN, a service mesh) - without opening a single inbound port.

It runs inside your own network, polls API Spector Cloud over HTTPS, runs each due check with the real api-spector engine (the same one the desktop app and CLI use: setup chains, pre/post scripts, assertions, faker data), and posts the result back. All traffic is outbound - the cloud never connects to you.

Run it

APP_URL=https://your-cloud-host \
AGENT_TOKEN=<your token> \
npx @testsmith/api-spector-agent

Generate the token under Private runner in the cloud (owner menu). Then tick Run on my private runner on any monitor and it runs here instead of on the cloud runner.

Prefer a container? The same runner ships as a Docker image:

docker run -d --name api-spector-agent --restart unless-stopped \
  -e APP_URL=https://your-cloud-host \
  -e AGENT_TOKEN=<your token> \
  testsmith/api-spector-agent:latest

Keep it running

npx is ideal for a CI step or a quick check. For an always-on host, install it and supervise it with your process manager:

npm i -g @testsmith/api-spector-agent
# then run `api-spector-agent` under systemd / pm2 with the env vars set

Environment

| Variable | Required | Default | Meaning | |---|---|---|---| | APP_URL | yes | - | Base URL of your API Spector Cloud | | AGENT_TOKEN | yes | - | Org API token with the agent ability | | POLL_INTERVAL_MS | no | 5000 | Poll cadence in milliseconds |

Security

  • Outbound only. No inbound port, tunnel, or firewall rule.
  • Scoped token. The agent ability can only read your org's due feed and post its results - nothing else. Revoke it any time to stop the agent.
  • Node 18+. No install-time dependencies; the engine is bundled in.
