Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

Page Manager

This project provides a skeleton for building single page webapps, with a focus on advanced browser navigation support, history manipulation and lazy loading.

Pages

Create a basic page like this:

import {registerPage, Page} from '@trullock/page-manager';
registerPage('view-thing', '/things/{thingId}', class extends Page {

});

The first argument 'view-thing' is the name of the page, this can be used to build/look-up its url later without needing to hardcode url strings everywhere

The second argument '/things/{thingId}' is the url (route) of the page

The third arguent is a class definition for the page.

Routing

Routes are definied in a simple way, e.g.

  • /path/to/my/page
  • /things/{thingId}
  • /parentThings/{parentId}/childThings/{childId}

Query strings are always decoded and captured, they do not need specifying in the route.

To build a URL from a route and some parameters, do this:

Page methods

Constructor

A page's constructor is called when an instance of the page is first created. Assuming the default caching policy this will only happen once per route definition. See the Caching section for more info.

The constructor is called without any knowledge of the URL it was requested on, for that use boot(opts).

The page markup is accessible in the constructor but it has not yet been attached to the main page DOM.

e.g.

	constructor($page){
		super($page);

		this.$thingName = $page.getElementById('ThingName');
	}

Boot

boot(opts) is called once the page has been attached to the DOM and is about to be shown for the first time. Assuming the default caching policy this will only happen once per route definition. See the Caching section for more info.

opts contains information about the request that was made to the page:

opts.event contains information about the navigation which occurred to this page.

opts.hash contains any hash fragment from the request url

opts.route contains information about the route and the request url and parameters

Any query or url parameters will also be present on opts. Currently these are at the top level meaning you could get conflicts between the formally defined properties above and any parameters. For now, avoid creating conflicting parameters with these names.

e.g. get a Thing from the database based on a url parameter and update the page markup with details of the Thing

Show

show(opts) is called before the page is shown. This may happen multiple times in a page's life.

Assuming the default caching strategy, the markup for a page will remain between consecutive show/hide events. Consequently any content which is present on one show which should not be on the next show will need manually adjusting.

e.g. Update the time the page was shown, every time its shown

Update

update(opts) is similar to show. If pageManager.navigate() is called to the same url (route) as the current page, show and hide are not called as you might expect, instead update(opts) gets called where you can update the page with the new information from opts

Hide

hide() is called when the page needs hiding, i.e. the user has navigated away and the next page is about to be shown.

Navigating

Navigate

To show a new page and push the url onto the history stack (a la a normal brower hyperlink click), use the navigate(url, data, checkBeforeHide = true) method.

url is the URL of the page to show

data is optional data to pass to the page

checkBeforeHide defaults to true, and causes the current page's beforeHide method to be called before hiding the current page and showing the next

replace

To show a new page and replace the current url (removing any evidence in history) use the replace(url, data) function.

url is the URL of the page to show

data is optional data to pass to the page

Note: this doesn't currently support beforeHide checks. This is a known limitation.

show

To show a new page and keep the current url use the show(url, data) function.

url is the URL of the page to show

data is optional data to pass to the page

back

To manually trigger a backwards (in history) page navigation, use the back(data, checkBeforeHide) method.

data is optional data to pass to the page

checkBeforeHide defaults to true, and causes the current page's beforeHide method to be called before hiding the current page and showing the next

beforeHide

If you wish to force the user to confirm a navigation away from the current page (e.g. to prevent losing unsaved changes in a form) you can use the beforeHide functionality.

Define the beforeHide handler on the PageManager setup:

pageManager.init({
	beforeHide: message => Promise.resolve(confirm(message))
});

and then define page specific beforeHide behaviours:

pageManager.registerPage('edit-thing', '/thing/{thingId}/edit', class extends Page {
	beforeHide = () => 'Are you sure?'
});

History manipulation

Sometimes in application-style webapps it's convenient to remove pages from the browser's history.

Say you have a form to create a new Thing, and your navigation path looks like this:

Home -> Add New Thing -> View Newly Added Thing

Traditionally, if you press Back when on the last page, you'd go back to the Add New Thing page. This is probably undesireable, you really want to go back to Home. In this case, make the navigation from Add New Thing to View Newly Added Thing use replace(url, data) instead of navigate(url, data).

However, what if you have multiple steps to add a new thing, like a wizard.

Home -> Add New Thing Step 1 -> Add New Thing Step 2 -> Add New Thing Step 3 -> View Newly Added Thing

In this case, you want to use removeHistory(predicate). This will rewind history until predicate no longer matches and then re-add the current page onto the end of the history stack, thus splicing any matched history entries from the record.

predicate must be a function of the following form:

A historyEntry looks like this:

	data: {} // this is the data associated with the page that was shown (i.e. what was passed to `show(opts)`)
	page: <Page> // this is the instance of the Page class associated with this history entry
}

So if your url history was as below:

/
/add-thing/step1
/add-thing/step2
/add-thing/step3
/thing/1

then you might call removeHistory() like this:

removeHistory((entry, i) => {
	return entry.data.route.path.indexOf('/add-thing/') == 0;
})

Refresh

To refresh the current page with the data/opts it was originally shown with, call the refresh() method.

Initialising PageManager

TO use Page Mangager you must initialise it by calling init(options).

Default pages

A loading page is always shown between page transitions, control the name of this (as used in registerPage(name, route, page)) with loadingPageName.

Control the name of the 404 page with error404PageName

Control the default page name with defaultPageName. This is the name of the page to show when authentication methods hves no other options and under extreme error conditions.

	loadingPageName: 'loading',
	error404PageName: 'error-404',
	defaultPageName: 'root',

Authentication

A major feature of PageManager is its handling of authenticated pages. To implement authentication, use the pageInterrupt option. This is a function that is called before fetching/booting/showing every page. Use it to see if the page needs authentication and handle authorization. You might do this like this:

Goals

After being interrupted for authentication, you probably want to continue the user to where they were previously trying to get to (e.g. after signing in). To do this, use the following:

navigate('goal', { 
	// optional
	fallback: '/fallback/url'
})

In the case that were was no goal (i.e. you went directly to the current page, it wasnt shown as an interruption) then the user will be navigated to the fallack url option. If you don't specify this then they will be sent to '/'.

Fetching page content

PageManager is built so that it can lazily fetch page markup. To do this, use the following options:

Events

When the URL has changed (including the first-load of the page), a custom DOM event is fired.

	window.addEventListener("page-manager.url-changed", e => {
		console.log(e.detail.url);
	});

This can be useful for update the active link in navigations, for example.
