Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

Headless Three.js viewer and stage for React: 3D model viewer with orbit controls, lighting, contact shadows, render on demand, and lazy loading. Zero dependencies beyond Three.js.

@uiness/three

Headless Three.js viewer and stage for React. Lazy-loads Three.js only when entering the viewport, renders on demand to save battery, handles lighting and contact shadows, and provides orbit controls with animated views.

Documentation · Registry · GitHub

pnpm add @uiness/three three

Viewer

import { Viewer } from '@uiness/three'

<Viewer
  src="/models/chair.glb"
  alt="Lounge chair"
  poster="/models/chair.webp"
  autoRotate
/>

Three.js is never imported on the server and only loads in the browser when the viewer approaches the viewport (IntersectionObserver with a 200px margin). While loading, the poster is displayed with a progress bar, then fades out smoothly once ready.

Custom scenes with Stage

import { Stage } from '@uiness/three'

<Stage
  onSetup={({ THREE, scene }) => {
    const geo = new THREE.TorusKnotGeometry(1, 0.3, 100, 16)
    const mat = new THREE.MeshStandardMaterial({ color: 0x3b82f6, roughness: 0.2 })
    const mesh = new THREE.Mesh(geo, mat)
    scene.add(mesh)
    return () => {
      geo.dispose()
      mat.dispose()
    }
  }}
  onFrame={({ scene }, dt) => {
    scene.rotation.y += dt * 0.5
    return true
  }}
/>

The setup callback receives { THREE, scene, camera, renderer, invalidate }, so your application does not need a static import of three either. The renderer is shared by every stage on the page, so settings made on it apply to all of them.

Without React

import { createViewer } from '@uiness/three/core'

const viewer = await createViewer(canvas, {
  src: '/models/chair.glb',
  autoRotate: true,
})

Performance & Rendering

  • Render on demand: The frame loop only runs while animating (auto-rotation, active damping, animated viewpoint transitions, or an active onFrame callback).
  • Off-screen pause: Pauses immediately when outside the viewport or when the browser tab is hidden.
  • DPR cap: Automatically scales up to devicePixelRatio capped at 2 (configurable via maxDpr).
  • Resource cleanup: dispose() systematically traverses geometries, materials, and textures.

With the uiness registry

Install three-viewer to get the ready-to-use component with a floating Radix toolbar, view switching, screenshot capture, fullscreen mode, and keyboard shortcuts:

npx shadcn@latest add @uiness/three-viewer
