Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

Audio, video, transcript and interactive visual story reader components for language learning apps

Readme

@umituz/web-media

Audio and video player components with transcript-synced subtitles, built for language learning apps.

Components

  • AudioPlayer — podcast-style bar player: play/pause, seek, ±10s skip, playback speed (0.75×–2×), volume, keyboard shortcuts, throttled position reporting.
  • VideoPlayer — course-style player with custom controls: everything above plus fullscreen and transcript-synced subtitles (KR / EN / TR / off) rendered from timed segments.
  • useMediaElement — the shared media element hook both players use. Reports position every 5 seconds of playback plus on pause, seek, end, and pagehide. Persistence stays in the host app.
  • TranscriptPanel — synchronized, searchable auto-scrolling transcript panel with timed segments, sentence click-to-seek, and bilingual display.
  • StoryReader — interactive visual story reader with speech bubbles, vocabulary click-to-lookup, situational effects, and comprehension quizzes. Supports both page-by-page and continuous vertical strip modes.

Install

The package ships TypeScript source and Tailwind classes; a Tailwind v4 host compiles it directly.

@import "tailwindcss";
@import "@umituz/web-media/source.css";

Colors bind to --color-* custom properties (--color-card, --color-primary, --color-foreground, --color-muted-foreground, --color-border, --color-ring, --color-primary-foreground) with sensible fallbacks, so any palette works.

Usage

import { AudioPlayer, VideoPlayer, type TranscriptSegment } from '@umituz/web-media'

<AudioPlayer
  src="/api/media/audio/ep-001"
  title="Episode 1"
  initialPosition={resumeAt}
  onPositionChange={(position, duration) => persist(position, duration)}
/>

const segments: TranscriptSegment[] = [
  { start: 0, end: 4.2, korean: '안녕하세요', english: 'Hello', turkish: 'Merhaba' },
]

<VideoPlayer
  src="/api/media/video/lec-001"
  segments={segments}
  onPositionChange={(position, duration) => persist(position, duration)}
  onEnded={() => markComplete()}
/>

Position reporting

onPositionChange fires at most every 5 seconds of playback advancement, and immediately on pause, seek, ended, and pagehide — safe to wire into a debounced store sync without flooding it.
