Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

Soft Hardware components for React (on Base UI) and SwiftUI, with animated duotone icons and agent guides

MetalUI

Soft Hardware components and animated icons for React. Alpha release; APIs may change before 1.0.

npm install @unlocalhosted/metalui
import '@unlocalhosted/metalui/styles.css';
import '@unlocalhosted/metalui/icons.css';
import { Button } from '@unlocalhosted/metalui';
import { SendAwayIcon } from '@unlocalhosted/metalui/icons';

<Button cap="primary"><SendAwayIcon size={16} />New canvas</Button>

The package is ESM only (no require(); use import). Using Tailwind v3? Import @unlocalhosted/metalui/styles.unlayered.css instead of styles.css: the same rules without the cascade layers that Tailwind v3's PostCSS plugin rejects. styles.css contains the compiled component utilities and material tokens; import it once. It does not include a global CSS reset. Import icons.css or icons/life.css for the icon set you use. Set data-mu-colorway="bone" or "graphite" on an ancestor to choose a colorway; otherwise the system preference applies.

MetalUI also ships SwiftUI through Swift Package Manager, source for the shadcn registry, and agent guides. See documentation and source. MIT licensed.

Layout and spacing

New in the current checkout; not yet published. The source build provides three layout classes: mu-stack for vertical content, mu-cluster for wrapping rows, and mu-auto-grid for columns that fit their parent. Compose existing controls with semantic gaps (gap-mu-related, gap-mu-group, gap-mu-section) or approved steps such as gap-mu-space-8 and p-mu-space-24.

<div className="mu-stack gap-mu-group p-mu-space-24">
  <div className="mu-cluster gap-mu-space-8">
    <Button>Cancel</Button>
    <Button cap="primary">Save</Button>
  </div>
</div>

The precompiled build includes these base layouts, semantic gap aliases, and the approved gap, p, px, and py step families. Other spacing families and application-specific Tailwind v4 variants require a consumer Tailwind build: import tokens.css and theme.css after tailwindcss in your CSS entry and let Tailwind scan complete class names. Responsive container variants require an ancestor query container. The package leaves the host's spacing scale, fonts, and reset alone.

See the CSS system guide for token sources, intrinsic grids, typography rhythm, override rules, and guidance for coding agents. This describes the repository build; check your installed release before relying on newly added utilities.
