Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

Portable privileged Host call router + capability enforcement (no OS I/O)

Readme

@viloris/vela-host-core

Portable privileged Host call router: register vela.call handlers, enforce capability grants, optional call middleware, return structured deny / RPC envelopes.

Status: pure TypeScript policy + dispatch. No OS I/O, no Bun process split.
Contracts: @viloris/vela-api (CapabilityHost, checkCapability, AppManifest).
Decisions: ADR 0002, ADR 0006, ADR 0007.
DX research: Hono Host DX notes (middleware/context inspiration; Hono is not a dependency).

Role

App TS --window.vela.call--> (preload / Shell) --RPC--> Host
                                                          ▲
                                                   @viloris/vela-host-core
                                                   handle + require
                                                          │
                                                   injected HostAPI.sys

| Owns | Does not own | |------|----------------| | Method registry (handle) | Page / WebView / window.vela | | Global use + chain / requirePermission | HTTP routing or embedding Hono | | ctx.require / grant checks / ctx.vars | Real clipboard / notify / tray / fs / dialogs | | invoke / invokeRpc | Zig Shell interop / UDS | | createHostEventBus (optional inject) | Preload wiring of window.vela.events | | Profile isolation | Material paint / hit routing |

Pair with @viloris/vela-shell-core for composition policy. Desktop Bun process wiring lives in @viloris/vela-host (Shell UDS client + session lifecycle + createDesktopHost).

Usage

import {
  createCapabilityHost,
  createHostEventBus,
  chain,
  requirePermission,
} from "@viloris/vela-host-core";
import { BuiltinPermissions } from "@viloris/vela-api";

const events = createHostEventBus();
const host = createCapabilityHost({
  api: {
    platform: "linux",
    sys: { /* inject facades: clipboard, notify, tray, … */ },
    events,
  },
  capabilities: {
    default: { permissions: [BuiltinPermissions.ClipboardWrite] },
  },
});

// Optional global onion (audit / timing). Runtime host concern.
host.use(async (_args, ctx, next) => {
  ctx.vars.set("t0", performance.now());
  return await next();
});

// Per-method: chain middleware + handler (still a single CallHandler).
host.handle(
  "clipboard.write",
  chain(
    requirePermission(BuiltinPermissions.ClipboardWrite),
    async (args, ctx) => {
      // … use host.api.sys after require
      void ctx;
      return { ok: true, text: String((args as { text?: string }).text ?? "") };
    },
  ),
);

// Plain handlers still work:
// host.handle("clipboard.write", async (args, ctx) => {
//   ctx.require(BuiltinPermissions.ClipboardWrite);
//   return { ok: true };
// });

const rpc = await host.invokeRpc({
  requestId: "1",
  method: "clipboard.write",
  args: { text: "hi" },
});

bun test packages/host-core
bun run --filter @viloris/vela-host-core typecheck
