Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

Portable in-process Shell policy + layer/hit state machine (no toolkit paint)

Readme

@viloris/vela-shell-core

Portable in-process Shell policy for desktop composition hosts: layer tree, web-shaped region store, hit routing, dogfood bootstrap, and a VelaPreloadBridge adapter.

Status: TypeScript state machine only. No windowing, WKWebView, or system material paint.
Contracts: @viloris/vela-api pure helpers remain the algorithm SoT (resolveHit, applyWebShapeUpdate, resolveMaterial).

Role

| This package | Host L4 (Swift / Win / …) | |--------------|---------------------------| | Mutable layer tree + gated insertLayer / privileged host insert | Map layers to NSView / HWND siblings; re-check material/camera grants | | Opaque region store + generation drop | Same rules at event boundary | | resolvePointer / pointerDown + lastHit | VelaHitRootView.hitTest mirrors resolveHit | | createPreloadBridge | Inject into WebView as window.vela | | Dogfood bootstrap specs | Create real underlay / web / glass views |

Public surface

import {
  createShellCore,
  createPreloadBridge,
  applyDogfoodBootstrap,
  DOGFOOD_LAYER_IDS,
} from "@viloris/vela-shell-core";

const core = createShellCore({
  platform: "macos",
  supportsLiquidGlass: false,
  // optional: page profile for material / camera inserts
  // profilePermissions: ["window:material"],
});
// Host-owned stack (bypasses insert gates)
applyDogfoodBootstrap(core, { x: 0, y: 0, width: 800, height: 600 });
const vela = createPreloadBridge(core);
// Page `layers.insert` for material requires `window:material` on the profile

Dogfood layer ids

Must match playground string literals:

| Constant | Id | Kind | |----------|-----|------| | DOGFOOD_LAYER_IDS.underlay | underlay-native | native underlay | | DOGFOOD_LAYER_IDS.mainWebview | main-webview | web-shaped webview | | DOGFOOD_LAYER_IDS.toolbarMaterial | toolbar-material | material toolbar |

Playground does not depend on this package (web content stays host-free). Tests pin the literals.

Non-goals

  • Real AppKit / WebView2 / GTK paint
  • Bun process split / Zig RPC (Phase 2)
  • Full capability engine / plugin host (use @viloris/vela-host-core for call)
  • Claiming S1–S7 host acceptance without a native Shell

Swift interface map

See hosts/macos-shell/Sources/VelaShell/README.md for how L4 modules should mirror this package.

Tests

bun test packages/shell-core

S-class coverage: S2 hole→underlay, S6 single lastHit, S7 stale generation, opacity≠hit, material resolve degrade, window region-through lite, bridge deny-all call, material/camera insert gates.
