Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

What's Panda

Panda is a powerful software that allows you to manage the states of your applications with incredible ease and flexibility, no matter the size or complexity of your apps. Unlike other state managers, it uses a single JSON data source and notifies in real time of any change occurring at any field level, no matter the depth. It's as simple as that!

It returns as result a JSON object with the following properties:

  • ok: (boolean) Indicates the status of the process: true for success and false for failure.

  • log: (string) Contains the error message in case of failure.

  • data: (undefined) Ignore this.

It works exactly the same way as get, except that it will update every time the data change.

It works only for keys inside a JSON object, and is useful when you need to set a key that is not predictible or a key you can't set as a string litteral for any reason.

It allows to:

  • Store functions (both sync and async).
  • Keep the reference to an object or a field.

Be aware of the following facts:

  • Any unpreserved function will be treated as an updater (Functional mutation).
  • You cannot specify a path into a preserved object. For example, 'preserved.obj.color' is not possible and will give undefined, only 'preserved.obj' is possible.

A shortcut allows you to replace anything between two keys by "...". It works for update, get, usePanda, delete and watch.

Don't worry, it doesn't loop into the whole JSON tree to resolve the paths. Instead, it uses a custom optimization to do it efficiently.

⚠️ Please, note that if a shortcut corresponds to more than one path, it'll be invalidated by panda.

Performance recommendations

  • Always give an unique and immutable ID to a watcher to avoid duplications, else it'll HEAVILY slow down updates.
  • Don't use panda to store or manage feeds. It's a state manager not a feeds manager! Use forestdb instead for feeds management.
