Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

@vitral/controls

v0.2.0

Published

Framework-free controls for Vitral addons: an anchored overlay, a listbox select and a menu, built on @vitral/core and @vitral/dom and wearing the Vitral styles.

Readme

@vitral/controls

The controls an addon needs, with no framework in them.

An addon draws its own markup, but a select, a menu and an anchored panel are not markup — they are behaviour, and each was being written again in every addon that needed one. These are written once, over @vitral/core's arithmetic and @vitral/dom's patcher, and they wear the same styles the framework components wear: a page with no framework gets the control the framework would have drawn.

import { createSelect, createMenu, createOverlay } from '@vitral/controls';

const select = createSelect(element, {
    options: [
        { label: 'Lisbon', value: 'lis' },
        { label: 'Porto', value: 'opo' }
    ],
    optionValue: 'value',
    ariaLabel: 'City',
    onChange: (value) => console.log(value)
});

createOverlay is a panel that hangs from something: put in the nearest overlay host, kept against its anchor while anything moves, closed on Escape — which puts the keyboard back where it was — or on a press outside it, and stacked so only the topmost one hears either.

createSelect is a listbox select: the button is the combobox, it keeps the keyboard while the list is open and points at the option in hand through aria-activedescendant. Arrows, Home, End, typeahead and Enter, as a native select behaves.

createMenu is a menu of commands following the APG menu button pattern: the menu takes the keyboard, the arrows walk it around the ends, Enter chooses and Escape puts the keyboard back on the button.

A framework component that already has a better control hands it to the addon instead — that is what an addon's content hooks are for.

LGPL-3.0-or-later. Part of the Vitral monorepo.
