Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

Readme

Shopify MCP Server

MCP Server for Shopify API, enabling interaction with store data through GraphQL API. This server provides tools for managing products, customers, orders, metafields, metaobjects, and more.

📦 Package: @vivgui/shopify-mcp 🚀 Command: shopify-mcp

A fork of GeLi2001/shopify-mcp, adding metaobject tools and GraphQL schema validation.

Features

  • Product Management: Full CRUD for products, variants, and options (8 tools)
  • Customer Management: Full CRUD, merge, and address management (8 tools)
  • Order Management: Smart lookup, cancel, close/open, mark as paid, fulfillment, refunds (10 tools)
  • Metafield Management: Get, set, and delete metafields on any resource (3 tools)
  • Metaobject Management: Discover definitions, read, upsert, and delete metaobject entries (5 tools)
  • Inventory Management: Set absolute inventory quantities at locations (1 tool)
  • Tag Management: Add/remove tags on any taggable resource (1 tool)
  • Pagination & Sorting: Cursor-based pagination and sort keys on all list queries
  • Advanced Filtering: Pass-through Shopify query syntax for all list endpoints
  • GraphQL Integration: Direct integration with Shopify's GraphQL Admin API (2026-01)
  • Comprehensive Error Handling: Clear error messages for API and authentication issues

Prerequisites

  1. Node.js (version 18 or higher)
  2. A Shopify store with a custom app (see setup instructions below)

Setup

Authentication

This server supports two authentication methods:

Option 1: Client Credentials (Dev Dashboard apps, January 2026+)

As of January 1, 2026, new Shopify apps are created in the Dev Dashboard and use OAuth client credentials instead of static access tokens.

  1. From your Shopify admin, go to Settings > Apps and sales channels
  2. Click Develop apps > Build app in dev dashboard
  3. Create a new app and configure Admin API scopes:
    • read_products, write_products
    • read_customers, write_customers
    • read_orders, write_orders
    • read_metaobjects, write_metaobjects (required by the metaobject tools)
  4. Install the app on your store
  5. Copy your Client ID and Client Secret from the app's API credentials

The server will automatically exchange these for an access token and refresh it before it expires (tokens are valid for ~24 hours).

Option 2: Static Access Token (legacy apps)

If you have an existing custom app with a static shpat_ access token, you can still use it directly.

Usage with Claude Desktop

Client Credentials (recommended):

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "shopify": {
      "command": "npx",
      "args": [
        "@vivgui/shopify-mcp",
        "--clientId",
        "<YOUR_CLIENT_ID>",
        "--clientSecret",
        "<YOUR_CLIENT_SECRET>",
        "--domain",
        "<YOUR_SHOP>.myshopify.com"
      ]
    }
  }
}

Static Access Token (legacy):

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "shopify": {
      "command": "npx",
      "args": [
        "@vivgui/shopify-mcp",
        "--accessToken",
        "<YOUR_ACCESS_TOKEN>",
        "--domain",
        "<YOUR_SHOP>.myshopify.com"
      ]
    }
  }
}

Locations for the Claude Desktop config file:

  • MacOS: ~/Library/Application Support/Claude/claude_desktop_config.json
  • Windows: %APPDATA%/Claude/claude_desktop_config.json

Usage with Claude Code

Client Credentials:

claude mcp add shopify -- npx @vivgui/shopify-mcp \
  --clientId YOUR_CLIENT_ID \
  --clientSecret YOUR_CLIENT_SECRET \
  --domain your-store.myshopify.com

Static Access Token (legacy):

claude mcp add shopify -- npx @vivgui/shopify-mcp \
  --accessToken YOUR_ACCESS_TOKEN \
  --domain your-store.myshopify.com

Alternative: Run Locally with Environment Variables

If you prefer to use environment variables instead of command-line arguments:

  1. Create a .env file with your Shopify credentials:

    Client Credentials:

    SHOPIFY_CLIENT_ID=your_client_id
    SHOPIFY_CLIENT_SECRET=your_client_secret
    MYSHOPIFY_DOMAIN=your-store.myshopify.com

    Static Access Token (legacy):

    SHOPIFY_ACCESS_TOKEN=your_access_token
    MYSHOPIFY_DOMAIN=your-store.myshopify.com
  2. Run the server with npx:

    npx @vivgui/shopify-mcp

Direct Installation (Optional)

If you want to install the package globally:

npm install -g @vivgui/shopify-mcp

Then run it:

shopify-mcp --clientId=<ID> --clientSecret=<SECRET> --domain=<YOUR_SHOP>.myshopify.com

Additional Options

  • --apiVersion: Specify the Shopify API version (default: 2026-01). Can also be set via SHOPIFY_API_VERSION environment variable.

⚠️ Important: If you see errors about "SHOPIFY_ACCESS_TOKEN environment variable is required" when using command-line arguments, you might have a different package installed. Make sure you installed @vivgui/shopify-mcp — the global command it provides is shopify-mcp.

Available Tools (49)

Pagination, Sorting & Filtering

All list query tools (get-products, get-customers, get-orders, get-customer-orders) support:

Metaobject Management (5 tools)

Metaobjects are custom data structures you define in Shopify. A definition is the schema (its type and field keys); an entry is one record of that type, identified by a GID and by a type + handle pair.

  1. get-metaobject-definitions

    • Discover metaobject definitions: field keys, types, validations, and enabled capabilities. Call this before writing entries
    • Inputs:
      • type (string, optional): Return a single definition by type. Omit to list all
      • first (number, default: 50): Number of definitions to return when listing
  2. get-metaobjects

    • List entries of a given type. Field values are returned as a flat key/value map
    • Inputs:
      • type (string, required): Definition type, e.g. "ingredient"
      • first (number, default: 25): Number of entries to return (max 100)
      • after (string, optional): Pagination cursor
      • query (string, optional): Shopify search syntax, e.g. "display_name:basil"
      • sortKey (string, optional): "id", "type", "updated_at", or "display_name"
      • reverse (boolean, optional): Reverse the sort order
      • includeReferences (boolean, default: false): Resolve reference fields into the objects they point at
  3. get-metaobject

    • Get one entry by GID, or by type + handle. Provide exactly one of the two keys
    • Inputs:
      • id (string, optional): Metaobject GID
      • type + handle (strings, optional): The entry's type and handle
      • includeReferences (boolean, default: false): Resolve reference fields one level deep
  4. upsert-metaobject

    • Create or update an entry. id updates it; type + handle creates it if missing; type alone always creates a new entry with an auto-generated handle
    • Updates are patches: fields you omit keep their current values. Pass an empty string to clear a field
    • Inputs:
      • id (string, optional): GID of an existing entry
      • type (string, optional): Definition type, required unless id is given
      • handle (string, optional): Upsert key within the type
      • fields (object, optional): Key/value map, e.g. { "title": "Basil", "tags": ["herb"] }. Non-string values are JSON-encoded automatically
      • status (string, optional): "DRAFT" or "ACTIVE", for definitions with the publishable capability
      • newHandle (string, optional): Rename the entry
      • redirectNewHandle (boolean, optional): Create a redirect from the old handle when renaming by id
  5. delete-metaobject

    • Delete one entry. Irreversible, and any reference field pointing at it is emptied
    • Inputs:

Debugging

If you encounter issues, check Claude Desktop's MCP logs:

tail -n 20 -f ~/Library/Logs/Claude/mcp*.log

Development

npm install
npm run build # rimraf dist && tsc
npm run validate:graphql # check every query against the live Shopify Admin schema

validate:graphql type-checks every query in src/ against the real Shopify Admin schema, fetched from the public shopify.dev direct proxy — no store credentials needed. A query referencing a field that does not exist, or that Shopify removed, fails here instead of at runtime. The pinned schema version lives in .graphqlrc.ts (currently 2026-01) and must be bumped alongside the default apiVersion. Also runs in CI via .github/workflows/graphql-validate.yml.
