Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

React session state, sign-in actions and OAuth buttons for apps using @voult/express

Readme

@voult/react

Session state, sign-in actions and "Continue with Google" buttons for React apps whose server uses @voult/express. The browser only ever talks to your server; tokens stay in httpOnly cookies and no Voult secret reaches the bundle.

npm install @voult/react

Quick start

import { VoultProvider, useSession, useVoult, OAuthButton } from '@voult/react';

function Account() {
  const { status, user } = useSession();
  const { signOut } = useVoult();
  if (status === 'loading') return <p>Loading…</p>;
  if (status !== 'authenticated') return <OAuthButton provider="google" returnTo="/account" />;
  return <button onClick={signOut}>Sign out {user.email}</button>;
}

export default function App() {
  return <VoultProvider apiBase="/api/auth"><Account /></VoultProvider>;
}

apiBase is where createVoultRouter() is mounted (default /api/auth). If the frontend runs on a different origin in development (e.g. Vite on :5173), proxy /api to your server so cookies are same-site.

API

| Export | What it does | |---|---| | <VoultProvider apiBase fetch> | Loads GET {apiBase}/session and shares it. fetch is optional (tests/SSR) | | useSession() | { status, user, isAuthenticated, error, refresh }. status: loading, authenticated, unauthenticated, mfa_required | | useVoult() | signIn({ email or username, password }) → { mfaRequired }, signUp({ email, password, fullName }), signOut(), verifyMfa(code), refresh() | | <OAuthButton provider intent returnTo> | A plain link to {apiBase}/oauth/:provider/start. Other props go on the <a> | | useOAuthProviders() | { providers: ['google', …], loading, error }: only providers that will work | | getOAuthRedirectResult() | { error: { code, description } \| null, linked } from the URL after an OAuth redirect | | VoultRequestError | What actions throw: code, status, message, field(s) | | isValidPassword, PASSWORD_REQUIREMENTS_MESSAGE, … | Same rules the API enforces |

MFA

signIn resolves { mfaRequired: true } and status becomes mfa_required; after an OAuth sign-in the server sends the browser to /mfa and status is mfa_required too. Either way:

const { verifyMfa } = useVoult();
await verifyMfa(code); // then status → 'authenticated'

OAuth errors

The server redirects failures to your error page (/login by default) with ?voult_error=:

const { error } = getOAuthRedirectResult();
if (error?.code === 'access_denied') { /* the user cancelled */ }
