Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

Zero-dependency JSX runtime for WarmJS — converts JSX to real DOM nodes, no virtual DOM.

Readme

@warmjs/core

Zero-dependency JSX runtime for WarmJS. It converts JSX directly into real DOM nodes — no virtual DOM, no diffing, no framework reactivity.

This package is restored from the original Pixorig custom UI shell (src/ui/jsx.ts). It is intentionally tiny (~90 lines) so it can be audited, vendored, and kept politically neutral.

Inspired by the SolidJS philosophy (JSX → direct DOM), but without a compiler or signals. Reactivity, if needed, lives in a separate layer.

Install

npm install @warmjs/core

Requires a DOM environment (browser). No runtime dependencies.

TypeScript setup

{
  "compilerOptions": {
    "jsx": "react",
    "jsxFactory": "h",
    "jsxFragmentFactory": "Fragment"
  }
}
/** @jsx h */
/** @jsxFrag Fragment */
import { h, Fragment } from "@warmjs/core";

Usage

/** @jsx h */
import { h } from "@warmjs/core";

function PanelHeader({ title, onBack }: { title: string; onBack: () => void }) {
  return (
    <div class="panel-header">
      <button onClick={onBack}>Back</button>
      <span>{title}</span>
    </div>
  );
}

const node = <PanelHeader title="Opacity" onBack={() => history.back()} />;
document.getElementById("sub-sidebar")!.appendChild(node);

Fragments:

/** @jsx h */
/** @jsxFrag Fragment */
import { h, Fragment } from "@warmjs/core";

const list = (
  <>
    <span>Monochrome</span>
    <span>Gradient</span>
  </>
);

API

h(tag, props, ...children): Node

  • tag: string | ComponentFunction | typeof Fragment
    • HTML tag (div, button, input, …) → document.createElement
    • SVG tag (svg, path, circle, rect, …) → document.createElementNS
    • Function component → called as tag({ ...props, children })
    • Fragment → DocumentFragment
  • Props:
    • onXxx={fn} → addEventListener(xxx.toLowerCase(), fn)
    • class / className → class assignment (SVG via setAttribute)
    • style={object} → Object.assign(el.style, value)
    • style="..." → setAttribute("style", ...)
    • boolean true → present attribute, false/null/undefined → skipped
    • innerHTML={string} → direct assignment
    • everything else → setAttribute(key, String(value))
    • children prop is ignored (children come from arguments)

Fragment({ children }): DocumentFragment

Groups children without a wrapper element.

ComponentFunction<P>

type ComponentFunction<P> = (props: P, ...children: Node[]) => Node;

Note: h() currently invokes components as tag({ ...props, children }). Keep components to the single-props form for forward compatibility.

What it is NOT

  • No hooks (useState, useEffect).
  • No signals / fine-grained reactivity (unlike SolidJS).
  • No re-render. Updates are imperative: re-call h() or patch the DOM manually.
  • No keyed list diffing, no scheduler, no SSR.

If you need auto-updates, add a minimal signal layer on top (planned as @warmjs/signals) instead of bloating this runtime.

Limitations (known)

  • SVG_TAGS covers common tags only. Extend it if you use text, tspan, ellipse, linearGradient, stop, etc.
  • No ref / key handling.
  • No numeric style → px conversion.
  • JSX.Element is typed as HTMLElement for simplicity.
