Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

@waypointnull/auto-update

v1.0.1

Published

Tiny electron-updater wiring for the family desktop apps: check on start, notify when downloaded, restart to apply.

Readme

@waypointnull/auto-update

Message-only electron-updater wiring for the family desktop apps (UsagiAI, Akumu, Tsuki).

This package owns the update machinery and nothing else: it checks for updates, downloads only on explicit consent, and talks to the front-end over IPC. It ships no UI — each app renders its own dialogs (shadcn AlertDialog on the Vue client).

Pure Electron-main glue, zero runtime dependencies of its own.

Install

npm install @waypointnull/auto-update electron-updater

electron-updater is a peer dependency; declare it in your app's dependencies too so electron-builder packages it and generates app-update.yml from your publish config.

Message contract

| Direction | Channel | Payload | Meaning | | --------- | ------------------- | ------------------ | ------------------------------- | | main→ui | update:available | { version } | a newer version exists | | main→ui | update:downloaded | { version } | the new version is on disk | | ui→main | update:respond | "download" | "restart" | "later" | the user's choice |

  • Nothing downloads until the front-end replies "download" (autoDownload: false).
  • "restart" quits and installs. "later" does nothing (a completed download installs on quit).
  • On start it silently checks after a debounce (default 4 s, override delayMs).

Main-process wiring

const { setupAutoUpdate } = require('@waypointnull/auto-update');

setupAutoUpdate({
  onError: (error) => console.log('auto-update:', error.message)
});

In dev (unpackaged) everything stays inert — setupAutoUpdate returns null.

Preload bridge (standalone window only)

The renderer is sandboxed (contextIsolation, no nodeIntegration), so expose a tiny bridge:

const { contextBridge, ipcRenderer } = require('electron');
contextBridge.exposeInMainWorld('updateBridge', {
  onUpdateAvailable: (cb) => ipcRenderer.on('update:available', (_e, info) => cb(info)),
  onUpdateDownloaded: (cb) => ipcRenderer.on('update:downloaded', (_e, info) => cb(info)),
  respond: (choice) => ipcRenderer.send('update:respond', choice)
});

Front-end

Render your own dialogs. Guard on the bridge so hub mode (no Electron) never shows them:

if (window.updateBridge) {
  window.updateBridge.onUpdateAvailable((info) => showDownloadDialog(info));
  window.updateBridge.onUpdateDownloaded((info) => showRestartDialog(info));
  // buttons call window.updateBridge.respond('download' | 'restart' | 'later')
}
