Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

LLM spend budgets and limits — cap and govern model cost.

Readme

@weaveintel/cost-governor

Keeps LLM spend inside a budget: records what every model and tool call costs, and applies limits, cascades, and caps before the bill runs away.

Why it exists

Token costs are invisible until the invoice arrives. One runaway agent that loops a few extra times, or quietly picks the expensive model for a trivial question, can turn a cheap task into a costly one — and you won't know until it's spent. Think of it like a prepaid phone plan: every call is metered against a balance, cheaper options get used when they'll do, and when the balance runs out the next call is stopped rather than silently overrunning. This package is that meter and that balance for your model traffic.

When to reach for it

Reach for it when you need to cap spend per run or per tenant, attribute cost to specific levers (model, tools, RAG, reasoning), or automatically downshift to cheaper models under budget pressure. If you need to block unsafe content rather than expensive calls, that's @weaveintel/guardrails; if you need retries and circuit breakers, that's @weaveintel/resilience.

How to use it

import { weaveCostLedger, wrapModelWithCostLedger } from '@weaveintel/cost-governor';

const ledger = weaveCostLedger({ sink: myCostSink });
const metered = wrapModelWithCostLedger(model, { ledger, runId: 'run-123' });

// every generate()/stream() now emits one cost row from the provider's usage block
const reply = await metered.generate({ messages });

What's in the box

  • Ledger: weaveCostLedger, createInMemoryCostLedger, wrapModelWithCostLedger, wrapAuditEmitterWithCostLedger; helpers computeUsd, aggregate.
  • Policy & budgets: resolveCostPolicy, TIER_PRESETS, weaveCostGovernor, weaveBudgetGate, CostCeilingExceededError.
  • Spend-reducing levers: model cascade (weaveModelCascadeResolver), dynamic tool subset (weaveToolSubsetFilter, weaveIntentRagToolSubsetFilter), prompt caching (weavePromptCachingShaper), history compaction (weaveHistoryCompactor), reasoning effort (wrapModelWithReasoningEffort), tool-output truncation (weaveToolOutputTruncator), max-steps (decideMaxSteps).
  • Durable variants: createDurableCostLedger, createDurableRunCostStateTracker.

Store subpaths (each pulls in an optional peer driver):

  • @weaveintel/cost-governor/sqlite, /postgres, /mongodb, /redis, /dynamodb — persist the ledger in your database.
