Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

SSG Editor

A WYSIWYG editor that can power your SSG page. No more remembering how to add a link in Markdown. Use great CKEditor 5 with perfect editing experience.

Text editor ✨ SSG Editor ✨ CMS

Installation

[!IMPORTANT] npm or any other package manager is required.

Run the command in the terminal. npm or any other package manager is required.

npm install -g @witoso/ssg-editor@latest

Usage

Run the command in the terminal to start writing:

ssge path/to/folder/with/files/to/write

Everything runs locally. When you run the command, you should see the local server starting.

SSG Editor is running at http://localhost:4321

Navigate to this page in the browser. Create new files or edit the current markdown ones in this folder.

The default port is 4321 and the server only listens on localhost. Override either with a flag (or the PORT / HOST environment variables, or the config file below):

ssge path/to/folder --port 8989 --host 0.0.0.0

--host is how you expose the editor to other devices on your network; leave it unset to keep it loopback-only.

Configuration

SSG Editor reads optional configuration from .sserc.js in the edited folder, falling back to the directory where you run the ssge command.

export default {
  port: 8989,
  host: "localhost",
  images: {
    uploadDir: "public/uploads",
    publicPath: "/uploads",
  },
};

port and host set where the server listens; a --port / --host flag or the PORT / HOST environment variable takes precedence over the config file.

Image uploads are written to uploadDir, relative to the edited folder. The editor inserts URLs using publicPath.

Development

This project uses pnpm.

pnpm install
pnpm run build

For local development, pnpm start copies test/fixtures/site to a temporary directory and launches Astro against that copy, using the fixture .sserc.js config. This keeps editor autosaves out of Vite's watched project files.

To do

  • [ ] More CKEditor 5 plugins (dynamic config?)
  • [ ] Tree view of files.
  • [ ] Image upload and storage.
  • [ ] Page preview?
