Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

@xcwds/plugin-install

Install support for an @xcwds app on @xcwds/sveltekit: an Install button where the browser offers one, Add to Home Screen steps on iPhone and iPad, and nothing once the app runs installed.

// xcwds.config.ts
import { defineConfig } from '@xcwds/core';
import install from '@xcwds/plugin-install';

export default defineConfig({
	brand,
	plugins: [install({ text: { heading: 'Install My App', intro: 'Keep it on your home screen.' } })]
});
<!-- Anywhere inside <App>; the settings plugin puts it on its page -->
<script lang="ts">
	import InstallCard from '@xcwds/plugin-install/InstallCard.svelte';
</script>

<InstallCard />

What it does

  • Chromium browsers fire beforeinstallprompt when the app can be installed, sometimes before the app's code has loaded. The build adds a line to the head script that catches it then; the page picks it up when it boots.
  • app.install has state (checked, installed, available, ios), subscribe(listener) and prompt(), which shows the browser's dialog (call it from a tap; a prompt can be shown once) and resolves to 'accepted', 'dismissed' or 'unavailable'.
  • installed is true when the app runs standalone (display-mode: standalone, or navigator.standalone on iOS), and after the browser reports appinstalled.
  • ios is true on iPhone and iPad (including iPadOS, which says it's a Mac with touch), where there's no prompt. isIos() and isStandalone() are exported for your own checks.

<InstallCard> renders nothing until the checks have run (a prerendered page can't know) or once installed. It's a card like the settings page's others (on --xcwds-shell-card). Change its words with text (heading, intro, install, iosSteps, menu; <strong> is kept, other markup is shown as text): the plugin's text option applies to every card (it's app.install.text), and a card's own text prop wins over it. Change its button colour with --xcwds-install-accent, or render your own from app.install.
