Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

v0.2.0

Published

Auto-collapse thinking blocks after the model finishes and keep them visible while streaming.

Readme

pi-thinking-collapse

Keep Pi's thinking blocks readable while the model is working, then get them out of the way once the answer lands.

  • Visible while streaming — thinking content stays expanded during message_update, so you can watch the model reason.
  • Auto-collapsed on completion — when the assistant message ends (message_end), the thinking block collapses to a single label, keeping the transcript readable without losing the thinking text.
  • ctrl+t still wins — Pi's global thinking toggle overrides the auto-collapse behavior, and a custom collapsed label set through setHiddenThinkingLabel is preserved.
  • Clicking a block is Pi's own behavior — since Pi 0.85 the renderer wraps each thinking block in a MouseRegion, so a click toggles that block's visibility natively. This package used to implement its own click handler; that duplicate was removed in 0.2.0. It registers no mouse handling and has no companion-extension requirement.

Install

pi install npm:@xzzpig/pi-thinking-collapse

How it works

The plugin patches AssistantMessageComponent.prototype (reload-safe, via a Symbol.for registry): updateContent computes an effective collapse flag per message — the global hideThinkingBlock flag from ctrl+t / settings wins, streaming forces expanded, and completion defaults to collapsed. Pi's own per-run click override (thinkingVisibilityOverrides, keyed by thinking-run index) is read by the renderer before that flag, so a click on a block is honored even while the automatic behavior keeps running.

The two layers are independent: this package owns when a block collapses on its own, Pi owns the user's click on a specific block.

Compatibility

  • pi-tool-display's Thinking: label prefix is a data-level decoration and is orthogonal: it shows when thinking is expanded and is hidden together with the thinking text when collapsed.
  • pi-vibeguard redacts thinking content; collapse state never mutates message data, so the two do not interact.
