Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

HTTP transport for MCP test servers

Readme

@youzi9601/mcp-testkit-http

HTTP transport adapter for @youzi9601/mcp-testkit.

Supports testing MCP servers that communicate over HTTP using the Streamable HTTP protocol.

Installation

npm install @youzi9601/mcp-testkit-http

Requires @youzi9601/mcp-testkit as a peer dependency:

npm install @youzi9601/mcp-testkit

Usage

import { HttpTransport } from '@youzi9601/mcp-testkit-http'
import { startMockHttpServer, stopMockHttpServer } from '@youzi9601/mcp-testkit-http'

// 1. Start a mock HTTP MCP server for testing
const { server, port } = await startMockHttpServer({
  responses: [
    { jsonrpc: '2.0', id: null, result: { tools: [] } },
  ],
})

// 2. Create transport pointing at your MCP server endpoint
const transport = new HttpTransport({
  url: `http://localhost:${port}/mcp`,
})

await transport.start()

// 3. Send JSON-RPC requests
const response = await transport.send({
  jsonrpc: '2.0',
  id: 1,
  method: 'tools/call',
  params: { name: 'my-tool', arguments: {} },
})

await transport.close()
await stopMockHttpServer(server)

Starting an embedded server process

Use startServer to launch a real server process before connecting:

const transport = new HttpTransport({
  url: 'http://localhost:3000/mcp',
  startServer: {
    command: 'node',
    args: ['./dist/server.js'],
    env: { PORT: '3000' },
  },
})

await transport.start()
// server is ready, send requests...
await transport.close()

Custom headers

const transport = new HttpTransport({
  url: 'http://localhost:3000/mcp',
  headers: {
    Authorization: 'Bearer my-token',
  },
})

Custom fetch

const transport = new HttpTransport({
  url: 'http://localhost:3000/mcp',
  fetch: myFetchImplementation,
})

API

HttpTransport

class HttpTransport implements Transport {
  constructor(options: HttpTransportOptions)
  start(): Promise<void>
  send(request: JsonRpcRequest): Promise<JsonRpcResponse>
  close(): Promise<void>
}

HttpTransportOptions

interface HttpTransportOptions {
  url: string
  startServer?: {
    command: string
    args: string[]
    cwd?: string
    env?: Record<string, string>
    readinessUrl?: string
  }
  headers?: Record<string, string>
  fetch?: typeof fetch
  signal?: AbortSignal
  timeout?: number
}

Transport interface

interface Transport {
  start(): Promise<void>
  send(request: object): Promise<object>
  close(): Promise<void>
  onNotification?(handler: (notification: object) => void): void
}

Mock server helpers

// Start a mock HTTP server that responds with configurable JSON-RPC responses
startMockHttpServer(options: MockHttpServerOptions): Promise<{ server: http.Server; port: number }>
stopMockHttpServer(server: http.Server): Promise<void>

The mock server cycles through responses array on each request.

Error types

The package exports standard transport errors:

  • TransportError — General transport failures (invalid JSON, non-200 response, etc.)
  • ServerSpawnError — Raised when startServer process exits unexpectedly
  • TimeoutError — Request timed out (via signal or timeout option)
