Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

@zaix/gtm-test-mode

v1.0.3

Published

A React hook and component to enable a test mode for GTM, allowing event validation without executing conversion actions.

Readme

@zaix/gtm-test-mode

A React hook and component to enable a "test mode" for Google Tag Manager (GTM).

When activated, this package intercepts events (like clicks or form submissions) to prevent the default behavior (e.g., redirection), allowing you to validate the dispatch of GTM events in preview mode without executing the final conversion action.

Features

  • Activate and deactivate test mode through the browser console (window.enableTestMode()).
  • State persists in sessionStorage, remaining active during the browsing session.
  • Displays a visual warning banner when the mode is active.
  • useTestMode hook to control interception logic in your components.

Installation

npm install @zaix/gtm-test-mode
# or
yarn add @zaix/gtm-test-mode
# or
pnpm add @zaix/gtm-test-mode

How to Use

1. Wrap your application with TestModeManager

In your application's main file (like _app.tsx or layout.tsx in Next.js), wrap your components with TestModeManager.

// Ex: in src/app/layout.tsx
import { TestModeManager } from '@zaix/gtm-test-mode';

export default function RootLayout({ children }: { children: React.ReactNode }) {
  return (
    <html lang="en">
      <body>
        <TestModeManager />
        {/* The rest of your application */}
        {children}
      </body>
    </html>
  );
}

2. Use the useTestMode hook in your components

In any component where you need to intercept an action, use the useTestMode hook.

"use client";

import { useTestMode } from '@zaix/gtm-test-mode';
import { useToast } from '@/hooks/use-toast'; // Your own toast hook
import { triggerGTMEvent } from '@/lib/gtm'; // Your own GTM function

export function MyConversionButton() {
  const { isTestModeActive } = useTestMode();
  const { toast } = useToast();

  const handleClick = (event: React.MouseEvent) => {
    // Trigger the GTM event in both modes
    triggerGTMEvent({ event: 'my_conversion' });

    if (isTestModeActive) {
      // Prevents the default action (e.g., navigating to another page)
      event.preventDefault();

      // Provides feedback to the user that the action was blocked
      console.log('TEST MODE: Navigation blocked.');
      toast({
        title: 'Test Mode Active',
        description: 'Navigation has been blocked.',
        variant: 'destructive',
      });
      return;
    }

    // Normal navigation logic here
    // Ex: router.push('/thank-you');
  };

  return <button onClick={handleClick}>Complete Purchase</button>;
}

3. Control via the Console

Open your browser's developer console to activate or deactivate test mode.

// To activate
window.enableTestMode();

// To deactivate
window.disableTestMode();
