Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

v1.1.0

Technical SEO audit engine: crawler, checks, scoring, storage and worker, with a CLI.

zero-audit

@zero-strategie/zero-audit-core is the open-source engine of zero-audit, a technical SEO audit tool. It crawls a website, runs 44 checks, scores the site's health and keeps every audit as an immutable snapshot so that you can see what changed between two audits.

It ships as a library and as a command-line tool. A hosted product built on this engine is available at https://audit.zero-strategie.dev.

  • Crawler: honours robots.txt and sitemaps, runs breadth-first with a politeness delay, follows redirects and probes URL variants.
  • Checks: 44 checks in five themes (see below), each with a severity (error, warning or notice) and the list of affected pages.
  • Scores: site health and per-theme scores (crawlability, https, linking, on-page, other), with the variation since the previous audit.
  • History: new and fixed issues between two audits, and a compare command.
  • Storage: SQLite out of the box, or Postgres.
  • Queue and worker: audits can be queued and processed by one or several worker processes.

Only audit sites you own or are allowed to crawl.

What it checks

| Theme | Checks | Examples | |---|---:|---| | Crawlability | 19 | 4xx and 5xx pages, unreachable pages and timeouts, redirect chains and loops, temporary redirects, pages blocked by robots.txt or X-Robots-Tag: noindex, pages more than 3 clicks deep, duplicate content, canonicals pointing to broken pages, long or parameter-heavy URLs, missing robots.txt or sitemap, duplicate URL variants | | On-page | 11 | missing, duplicate, too short or too long titles, missing or duplicate meta descriptions, missing or multiple <h1>, thin content, low text-to-HTML ratio | | Linking | 8 | broken internal links, pages with a single incoming link, too many links on a page, nofollow links, empty or generic anchor text ("click here"), files linked as pages | | HTTPS | 3 | pages served over http, http links on an https site, missing HSTS | | Other | 3 | slow responses, uncompressed pages, missing llms.txt |

The checks reference lists every check with its threshold and how to fix it. Since 1.1.0 an audit runs 44 checks instead of 20: comparing an audit made with 1.0 to one made with 1.1 shows the new checks' findings as new issues, even if the site did not change.

Installation

Requires Node.js 22 or later.

npm install @zero-strategie/zero-audit-core

Command line

Without installing anything:

npx @zero-strategie/zero-audit-core https://example.com --direct --json report.json

Once the package is installed, it provides a zero-audit binary:

npx zero-audit https://example.com --direct --json report.json

--direct crawls inside the current process and writes the full snapshot to report.json. Without it, zero-audit https://example.com puts the audit in a queue and prints its identifier; a worker started with zero-audit worker then processes it, and --wait waits for the result.

zero-audit https://example.com --wait # queue, then wait for a worker
zero-audit worker # process queued audits
zero-audit compare <A> <B>                     # compare two completed snapshots
zero-audit migrate --store postgres # apply storage migrations (needs DATABASE_URL)

Run zero-audit --help for every option. The messages of the CLI (help, progress and errors) are in French.

Library

import { createStorage, createRunAudit, migrateStorage } from '@zero-strategie/zero-audit-core';

const config = { store: 'sqlite', dbPath: './.zero-audit/audit.db', databaseUrl: null } as const;

await migrateStorage(config);
const storage = await createStorage(config);

const runAudit = createRunAudit({
  storage,
  events: { started: () => undefined, finished: () => undefined, failed: () => undefined },
});

const { snapshot } = await runAudit.execute({
  rootUrl: 'https://example.com',
  limit: 100,
  delayMs: 1000,
});
console.log(snapshot.id, snapshot.pagesCrawled);

await storage.close();

createRunAudit refuses private network addresses by default (SSRF guard). The package also exports the use cases, ports, checks and scoring functions; the exported names are listed in src/index.ts.

Documentation

About

zero-audit is built by Zero Stratégie. Its feature set is inspired by commercial site-audit tools such as Semrush's Site Audit, and the numeric identifiers of its checks follow the numbering used by Semrush's Site Audit, so that results can be compared. It is an independent project, not affiliated with or endorsed by Semrush. Zero Stratégie has no link with Ahrefs or Screaming Frog either. The check wording is original.

Licence

zero-audit is free software, released under the GNU Affero General Public License v3.0 (AGPL-3.0-only).
