Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

@zerolith/cli

The zerolith command line from npm: new, dev, which serves a project with its packages resolved from node_modules and forwards its API to a backend, serve, build, which bundles and minifies an application with Rolldown compiled into the binary, preview, skill, which writes the zerolith skill for coding agents into a project, importmap, and doctor. The binary is written in Rust; this package carries none itself and depends optionally on one package per platform, so npm installs only the binary that matches the machine.

Install it once and start a project. new asks a few questions, each with a default, writes the starter, and installs its dependencies, this package among them:

npm install --global @zerolith/cli
zerolith new my-app
cd my-app
zerolith dev

Without a global install, npx @zerolith/cli new my-app does the same, and inside the project npx zerolith dev and its npm scripts run the copy it lists.

Or add it to an existing project and call it through npx:

npm install --save-dev @zerolith/cli
npx zerolith doctor .

Prebuilt binaries exist for Linux (glibc), macOS, and Windows on x64 and arm64. On any other system, or on Alpine and other musl distributions, install the crate with cargo install zerolith --locked and point ZEROLITH_BINARY_PATH at the binary; the shim runs that instead. Installing with --omit=optional leaves the binary out, and the shim says which platform package to install.

The commands are documented in the command line guide.

The commands and their flags are stable at 1.0: one that could break a script goes only in a major, after a deprecation notice, under the versioning policy.

Documentation

  • The command line guide covers every command and option, and zerolith.json.
  • Building and serving covers what the build writes and how to serve it from a static host, a web server, or a backend.
  • New to zerolith? The tutorial builds an app step by step, and the playground runs code in the browser.
