Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

Kepler Dictionary Plugin

A Kepler plugin that lets you look up words across multiple dictionaries without leaving your keyboard.

What it does

Type /dict in Kepler to open the dictionary search mode, then enter any word to query your enabled dictionary sources simultaneously.

Supported sources:

| Source | Language | Data | | --------------------------------------------- | -------- | ------------------------------------------- | | Duden | German | Word, grammatical class, link to full entry | | DWDS | German | Headword + definitions from the article | | Wiktionary | English | Definitions with part of speech |

Each result shows the source as a badge and opens the full dictionary entry in your browser when selected.

When no query has been entered yet, the search mode shows how many sources are currently active.

Unhealthy sources

Sources are queried in parallel, and results can only be shown once every one of them has answered — so a source whose host hangs would otherwise stall the entire lookup until the runtime's ~10s fetch timeout, long enough that Kepler gives up and shows nothing.

To prevent that, a source that fails is skipped for 10 minutes before being tried again. An outage therefore costs one slow query rather than breaking lookups for as long as it lasts. Paused sources are named on the search mode's status line, and a word simply not being in a dictionary (HTTP 404) counts as a miss, not a failure.

Installation

Requirements: Node.js and pnpm

git clone https://github.com/zFlxw/kepler-dictionary.git
cd kepler-dictionary
pnpm install
pnpm build

The build step bundles the plugin and writes it to:

~/Library/Application Support/Kepler/Plugins/flxws-kepler-dictionary.keplugin/

Then in Kepler:

  1. Open Settings → Plugins
  2. Enable Community Plugins if not already active
  3. The Dictionary plugin should appear in the list — enable it
  4. Use /dict or type dictionary in the global search to open it

After any code change, run pnpm build again and reload the plugin in Kepler.

Configuration

In the plugin settings you can toggle each source on or off individually:

  • Enable Duden — on by default
  • Enable DWDS — on by default
  • Enable Wiktionary (English) — on by default
