Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

SearchService retains its injected SearchClient contract and existing search, index, bulk, count and index-management operations. ElasticsearchSearchClient adapts that body-based port to Elasticsearch 9's document/operations/top-level query shapes, including AbortSignal forwarding. It loads the optional @elastic/elasticsearch peer lazily and creates one transport.

Configure ZuckerSearchModule once at the composition root. forRoot({ client, enabled, ownsClient, aliases }) accepts optional lifecycle settings. forRootAsync factories may return this options object or the previous bare SearchClient. Features inject SearchService and supply their document/query policy.

onModuleInit pings the configured dependency and ensures configured aliases. Failure preserves application startup and exposes isHealthy() === false, allowing a consumer's database fallback. Disabled services perform no connection/index operations. refreshHealth supports a later explicit recheck. ownsClient: true closes the client once during shutdown; externally owned clients remain open. The lazy adapter has no Nest lifecycle hook, so the service is the sole lifecycle owner.

Alias definitions specify an alias, optional index prefix and static mappings/settings or a function of installed plugin names. Alias creation only evaluates the schema when a new index is needed. createIndexWithTimestamp, switchAlias and getStats are generic index primitives. Switching uses one alias update; old-index deletion is opt-in and never deletes the active target. Discovery errors other than 404 stop the switch. Failed old-index cleanup is best effort. Request errors remain caller-visible; health/statistics failure logs use fixed text to avoid credential-bearing transport errors.

Document schemas, analyzer choice, shard policy, alias naming, fields, boosts, facets, synchronization policy and retirement decisions remain in consumers. No product module is imported. Existing SearchClient implementations need not implement optional lifecycle/plugin/alias operations unless their consumer enables those features.

The adapter adds an optional Elasticsearch 9 peer without changing existing client injection. No schema or index-format migration is required by adoption. Rollback restores the consumer composition and pinned package. Tests were added for lazy lifecycle, disabled startup, failure/recovery, modern request shapes, cancellation and safe alias switching, but were not run in this source-only migration. Real Elasticsearch plugin/mapping/search/reindex checks remain unverified.
