Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

Pulumi dynamic provider for Hemlig secret control-plane resources.

Hemlig Pulumi provider

@zyno-io/hemlig-pulumi-provider is a dynamic Pulumi provider for Hemlig control-plane secrets. It uses the administrator API; AWS infrastructure remains owned by the hemlig/cdk construct.

import * as k8s from "@pulumi/kubernetes";
import * as pulumi from "@pulumi/pulumi";
import { Provider } from "@zyno-io/hemlig-pulumi-provider";

const hemlig = new Provider("hemlig", {
  adminUrl: "https://admin.example.com",
});

hemlig.secret("payments", {
  secretId: "payments-api",
  environment: "prod",
  metadata: { description: "Payments API" },
  acl: [{ consumerId: "prod-east", permissions: ["read"] }],
  payload: pulumi.secret({ API_TOKEN: { encoding: "utf8", value: "value" } }),
});

const paymentsAgent = hemlig.agentGrant(
  "payments-agent",
  {
    consumerId: "prod-payments",
    environment: "prod",
    capabilities: ["read", "write"],
    secretGrants: [
      {
        secretId: "payments/production/api-key",
        permissions: ["read", "write"],
      },
    ],
    displayName: "payments namespace in prod",
    bootstrapGeneration: "1",
  },
  { protect: true },
);

// Store only this one-use value in the intended namespace. It expires after
// 30 minutes and is consumed by the controller when it creates its mTLS leaf.
new k8s.core.v1.Secret("payments-bootstrap", {
  metadata: { name: "payments-bootstrap", namespace: "payments" },
  stringData: { token: paymentsAgent.bootstrapToken },
});

The service has no public secret deletion endpoint. Destroying this resource removes it from Pulumi state but intentionally leaves the remote secret intact.

Set a short-lived OIDC token in HEMLIG_ADMIN_TOKEN for each invocation. The provider reads it only while performing a Hemlig API mutation; it is not a Pulumi resource input or output. A payload revision is written only when the declared payload changes. Metadata or ACL-only changes create a new control revision while retaining the current payload revision.

An AgentGrant's consumer ID and environment are immutable; changing either replaces the resource. Exact per-secret permissions are updated in place and automatically reconcile read delivery access. bootstrapGeneration may be bumped only while its grant is still pending, to replace an expired unredeemed capability; each bump creates one fresh 30-minute capability.
