Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

a-form-core

The stable language shared by every AForm package.

a-form-core contains the serializable TypeScript contracts for form specifications, responsive layouts, diagnostics, normalized trees, and async validation rules. It has no runtime dependencies and no framework coupling.

Open the AForm Playground to explore these contracts in a visual form builder.

Install

npm install a-form-core

Use This Package When

  • You generate or store AForm specifications.
  • You need shared types in an adapter, editor integration, or renderer.
  • You exchange form definitions across browser, server, worker, or build-time boundaries.
  • You want to create a normalized specification without importing React types.

For YAML parsing and normalization, use a-form-parser. For rendering, use a-form-react.

Define a Form Contract

import type { FormSpec } from "a-form-core";

const registration: FormSpec = {
  version: "1",
  schema: {
    type: "object",
    required: ["email"],
    properties: {
      email: { type: "string", title: "Email", format: "email" },
    },
  },
  uiSchema: {
    email: { "ui:autocomplete": "email" },
  },
  layout: [
    {
      type: "field",
      path: "email",
      span: { mobile: 12, tablet: 8, desktop: 6 },
    },
  ],
};

Main Types

| Type | Purpose | | --- | --- | | FormSpec | Complete versioned form contract | | NormalizedFormSpec | Form contract with stable node IDs and complete responsive spans | | FieldNode, SeparatorNode | Responsive flow of independent fields with optional titled separators | | ResponsiveSpan | Mobile, tablet, and desktop values for the 12-column grid | | JsonValue, JsonObject | Framework-neutral JSON values and form state | | Diagnostic, DiagnosticSeverity | Structured parser and validation feedback | | SourcePosition, SourceRange | Zero-based source coordinates with offsets | | AsyncValidationRuleSpec | Declarative remote validation behavior |

Responsive Layout

Fields pack left-to-right into the 12-column grid and wrap automatically once a row runs out of space. Fields accept either one span or breakpoint-specific spans:

const fullWidth = 12;

const responsive = {
  mobile: 12,
  tablet: 6,
  desktop: 4,
} as const;

Missing values cascade during normalization: mobile defaults to 12, tablet defaults to mobile, and desktop defaults to tablet.

Design Guarantees

  • Specifications are immutable TypeScript data contracts.
  • FormSpec.version is currently fixed to "1".
  • Field nodes reference JSON Schema properties through dotted paths such as person.email.
  • Specifications must contain data only. Runtime functions, credentials, and transport configuration belong in the host application.
  • This package defines contracts; it does not parse, validate, normalize, or render them.
