Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

Although technology may not replace the instructor's role in a laboratory, it may enhance the level of interactivity and enhance a laboratory or class session. The most effective use of technology in both Neuroscience courses was while conducting laboratory sessions with the students. Lecture slides and recording equipment are bulky, and tables and chairs can sometimes be difficult to move. Therefore, it is critical that any such equipment can be moved as easily as possible. With the advent of multimedia CD-ROM technology, instructional materials can become extremely mobile (compare the large, heavy equipment of the time with the CD-ROM/ computer combinations of today). Instead of taking expensive teaching equipment to a distant venue, CD-ROM technology is as easy to use as a laptop computer, and it is certainly more convenient than lugging around a tray of student response cards. In addition, online usage of interactive CD-ROMs provides accessibility to information that is timely and is being reviewed by other students, which leads to an increased level of classroom interaction. In this way, effective use of technology does not replace the instructor's role in a classroom; rather, it enhances the level of interaction and teaches the students in new ways. Some of these methods will be discussed in more detail in the following case studies.

As discussed earlier in the article, my courses are strongly influenced by the philosophy of the structure and systems approach at Dartmouth College. However, most of the students in my courses are majoring in the biological sciences, with only a small proportion of the students in the Neurobiology course having a background in physics or physiology. This issue led me to develop two different learning environments for the Bio and Neuro courses. In the case study below, I use interactive CD-ROMs for the Neurophysiology course, whereas in the second case study, I used PowerPoint slides for the Neurobiology course. The following case studies have been used in previous classroom courses, and the results have been quite satisfactory. However, I only discuss the use of these methods in the context of educational technology. 84d34552a1
