Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

Adonis Static Site Generation (SSG)

Prerender routes to static HTML for AdonisJS enabling Adonis sites to follow the Jamstack architectural approach.

Install

npm i adonis-ssg
yarn add adonis-ssg
pnpm add adonis-ssg

Features

  • Simply adds a node ace prerender:routes command
  • Follows a similar prerendering pattern to Astro
  • Enables prerendering for dynamic routes
  • Mix prerendered and non prerendered
  • Application wide prerendering can be defined in one getStaticPaths function

Usage

Create a function getStaticPaths and export it from any file. getStaticPaths will be used to determine what routes will be prerendered and provide parameters for dynamic paths.

// ./start/routes.ts

// Define your routes as you would normally...

// Add
export function getStaticPaths() {
    return {
        // Routes you want prerendered
        // Eg. [/route_pattern]: null for a static route,
        // Eg. [/route_pattern_with_some/:parameter]: async () => { return [array of parameter objects]} for a dynamic route
    },
};

Add the file exporting getStaticPaths to directories in .adonisrc.json under the key ssg

{
  "directories": {
    "ssg": "start/routes"
  }
}

Run node ace configure adonis-ssg to add adonis-ssg commands to .adonisrc.json

It will make the following change.

{
  "commands": ["adonis-ssg/dist/index.cjs"]
}

Finally call prerender:routes. By default this will render your HTML files to the public directory as specified in your .adonisrc.json although you can change this with the --output or -o flag.

node ace prerender:routes

Examples

Example prerendered "home", "todo" and "todos/:id" pages with a dynamic "about" page.

// ./start/routes.ts
import Route from "@ioc:Adonis/Core/Route";
import Todo from "./app/Models/Todo";

Route.get("/", async ({ view }) => {
  return view.render("home");
});

Route.get("/about", async ({ view }) => {
  return view.render("about");
});

Route.get("todos", "TodosController.getAll");
Route.get("todos/:id", "TodosController.getById");

export function getStaticPaths() {
  return {
    "/": null,
    "/todos": null,
    "/todos/:id": async () => {
      const todos = await Todo.all();
      return todos.map((todo) => ({
        params: {
          id: todo.id,
        },
      }));
    },
    // We ignore "/about" because we dont want to prerender it
  };
}

Add prerender to build command to package.json

{
  "scripts": {
    "build": "node ace prerender:routes && node ace build --production"
  }
}
