Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

AEON — your personal coding companion. A terminal AI coding agent with a TUI, tool use, and guardrails.

AEON

Your personal coding companion — an AI agent that lives in your terminal. It reads your files, edits them, runs commands, and asks before it touches anything destructive.

macOS / Linux — a single standalone binary, nothing else to install (includes the UI):

curl -fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/Ashu463/pi-cli/master/install.sh | bash

Via npm — works anywhere Node 18+ runs, but the UI additionally needs Bun:

npm i -g aeon-ai

Quick start

aeon login --provider deepseek --api_key sk-... # or openai / anthropic
aeon set --provider deepseek --model deepseek-chat
aeon # opens the UI

Commands

| Command | What it does | | --- | --- | | aeon | Opens the terminal UI (default) | | aeon run --p "..." | One-shot prompt, prints to stdout — for scripts and CI | | aeon login --provider <p> --api_key <k> | Store credentials for a provider | | aeon set --provider <p> --model <m> | Choose the active provider and model | | aeon list | List models available to your key | | aeon logout | Remove stored credentials |

Supported providers: deepseek, openai, anthropic.

The UI needs Bun

The terminal UI renders through a native library that currently only loads under the Bun runtime:

curl -fsSL https://bun.sh/install | bash

Without Bun, aeon prints a short note instead of the UI — but every other command, including aeon run, works on Node 18+ as normal.

What it can do

  • Tools — read, write, edit, and bash, executed in parallel within a turn
  • Streaming — replies appear as they're generated
  • Approval prompts — write, edit, and bash ask for confirmation before running
  • Context compaction — long sessions are summarised automatically instead of overflowing
  • Retries — transient provider failures are retried with backoff

Guardrails

The first time you run AEON in a folder, it asks before touching anything:

AEON wants to read and edit files in:
  /path/to/your/project

Trust this folder? [y/N]

This is separate from the per-action confirmations below — it's a one-time "may AEON operate here at all" check, remembered per folder (~/.pi-cli/trusted-dirs.json) so you're not asked again next time. Declining exits without reading anything.

AEON is also deliberately confined to the directory you start it in:

  • File tools refuse anything outside that directory — traversal, absolute paths, and symlinks pointing out are all resolved and rejected
  • Secret files (.env, *.pem, id_rsa, .ssh/, .aws/, .npmrc, credential JSON) are refused even inside the project
  • bash ignores any working directory the model asks for, and blocks credential snooping, curl | sh, and obviously destructive commands

Two things worth knowing: bash uses a blocklist, not a sandbox, so treat the approval prompt as the real control — and like any AI coding tool, the files it reads are sent to your chosen provider's API.

Config

Credentials and sessions live in ~/.pi-cli/. Environment variables:

| Variable | Default | Purpose | | --- | --- | --- | | LOG_LEVEL | info | Log verbosity (debug for tool and request detail) | | COMPACT_TOKEN_THRESHOLD_OVERRIDE | 50000 | When context compaction kicks in |
