Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

lightweight and easy to use package to add a dropdown effect

Readme

Simple Dropdown package

This is a simple dropdown menu package that can be applied easily to any project. It can be installed with npm install akw-simp-dd

The overall design is a box icon with three lines that turn into an X once clicked and toggle the appearance of a menu.

Use instructions

There are two components for this package: the dropdown.js and dropdown.scss. To set up, make sure you have two div elements specified: One which will be the actual icon, and another which is the menu to be toggled. An example for this can be found in the index.html file in this repo. I wanted this to be somewhat customizable, so you can specify the color, background color, and size of the icon. You also need to specify how the menu should appear before being activated, and after.

Setting up the icon

The menu icon should have a set height, width, background color, and color. The icon looks and functions best if it is a square rather than a rectangle, but feel free to play around with styling to find something that works best for your project. From there, just be sure to use sass to compile the dropdown.scss file into your main project.

Setting up the menu

You must decide how you wish your menu to appear and disappear once the icon is clicked. The module simply toggles the class .shown for whatever div you use for the menu portion.

inserting the package into your project

import the module into your main javascript file. From there, pick the div you want to use for your icon and for your menu, and call dropDownMaker.addDropDown(icon, menu). E.g.

import dropDownMaker from '../node_module/simple-drop-down/dropdown'

let icon = document.getElementById('icon');
let menu = document.getElementById('menu');
dropDownMaker.addDropDown(icon, menu);
