Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

api-traffic-replay

v1.0.2

Published

Record real API traffic, replay it anywhere, and instantly spot what changed

Readme

🚀 api-traffic-replay

Debug production API issues locally by replaying real requests.

😩 The Problem

Ever faced this?

  • Bugs only happen in production
  • You can't reproduce the exact API request
  • Missing headers, auth tokens, or payload
  • Logs don’t give the full picture

👉 Result: hours wasted debugging something you can’t recreate.

⚡ The Solution

api-traffic-replay records real API requests and lets you replay them locally with full context.

  • Same request
  • Same headers
  • Same payload

And now… you can finally debug it.

🔥 Features

  • 📥 Record real API traffic (request + response)
  • 🔁 Replay requests locally or in staging
  • 🔍 Detect response differences (diff)
  • 🛡️ Mask sensitive headers (auth, cookies)
  • ⚡ Zero-config setup
  • 💻 CLI support for replay & debugging

🧪 Quick Start

1. Install

npm install api-traffic-replay

2. Add Middleware

import express from 'express';
import { apiReplay } from 'api-traffic-replay';

const app = express();

app.use(apiReplay());

app.get('/test', (req, res) => {
  res.json({ ok: true });
});

app.listen(3000);

3. Run your app

Requests will now be automatically recorded.

💻 CLI Usage

# List recorded requests
npx api-traffic-replay list

# Replay a request
npx api-traffic-replay replay <requestId>

# Compare responses (diff)
npx api-traffic-replay diff <requestId>

🔍 Example Diff Output

❌ Differences detected:

- total: 100 → 120
- status: "success" → "failed"

⚙️ Configuration

app.use(apiReplay({
  ignore: ['/health', '/metrics'],
  maskHeaders: ['authorization', 'cookie']
}));

🎯 Use Cases

  • 🐛 Debug production-only bugs
  • 🔄 Validate API changes before deployment
  • 🧪 Replay real requests for testing
  • 💳 Investigate payment or third-party API issues
  • ⚠️ Detect breaking changes in CI

🛡️ Security

Sensitive data like tokens and cookies can be masked using configuration options.

🧠 How It Works

  1. Middleware captures incoming request + response
  2. Stores it locally
  3. CLI replays the same request
  4. Diff engine highlights what changed

🚀 Why use this?

Unlike logging or testing tools:

  • Uses real production traffic
  • Requires zero setup
  • Helps you reproduce issues instantly

🔮 Roadmap

  • Web dashboard for replay sessions
  • CI/CD integration for automated diff checks
  • Team collaboration (share request IDs)
  • Remote storage (S3, DB)
