Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

Astro Show Route, Template, and Components

CI

I was inspired to create this project as I have a Drupal background and I really like Twig template debug output. This project pays homage to that and I find this really useful.

This is a dev-only Astro integration that injects HTML comments showing which route, template, and astro components are being used on any given page.

NPM Package

https://www.npmjs.com/package/astro-show-route-template-components

DevTools showing astro-source comments

Why

Two complementary debugging layers:

  1. Route & templates — one comment per page after <html>, visible in View Source:

    <!-- ASTRO | Route: /blog/foo | Template: src/pages/blog/[slug].astro -->
  2. Components — a comment above each rendered node, visible in the Elements panel:

    <!-- astro-source: src/components/Footer.astro 12:4 -->
    <footer>...</footer>

Component comments persist after the Audit dev toolbar strips data-astro-source-* attributes. DOM nodes stay uncluttered.

Requirements

  • Astro 4+
  • Dev toolbar enabled for component comments (source attributes are only emitted when the dev toolbar is active)

Install

npm install -D astro-show-route-template-components

Usage

// astro.config.mjs
import { defineConfig } from "astro/config";
import showRouteTemplateComponents from "astro-show-route-template-components";

export default defineConfig({
  integrations: [showRouteTemplateComponents()],
});

Both route and component comments are enabled by default. No layout changes required.

Options

showRouteTemplateComponents({
  enabled: true,
  routes: true,
  components: true,
  routePrefix: "ASTRO",
  componentPrefix: "astro-source",
  srcDir: "src",
  includeLoc: true,
  pathMarkers: ["/src/", "/node_modules/"],
});

| Option | Default | Description | |--------|---------|-------------| | enabled | true | Turn off without removing the integration | | routes | true | Inject route/template comment after <html> | | components | true | Inject per-component source comments | | routePrefix | "ASTRO" | Prefix in route comments. prefix is an alias. | | componentPrefix | "astro-source" | Prefix in component comments | | srcDir | "src" | Root folder for repo-relative route paths | | includeLoc | true | Append line:col to component comments | | pathMarkers | ["/src/", "/node_modules/"] | Markers used to shorten component file paths |

Disable one layer if you only need the other:

showRouteTemplateComponents({ components: false }); // route comments only
showRouteTemplateComponents({ routes: false }); // component comments only
